Cotton Seed Production by Country
India stayed the largest cotton seed producer while adding 900,000 tonnes and Pakistan added 1,598,493 tonnes. The figures below reproduce FAO Crops and Livestock Products records for item Cotton seed, 2019-2023, reporting production quantity in tonnes. The table lists 110 countries; 107 reported a 2023 quantity, and the 2023 annual listed total is 41,014,242 tonnes. The 2023 country list for cotton seed production runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
India produced 1.13 times as much as China: 10,600,000 tonnes against 9,400,000, while Brazil ranks third with 4,494,600 tonnes, 4,905,400 tonnes behind China. The top two hold 48.8 percent of the listed total, with third and fourth at 4,494,600 and 3,305,780 tonnes respectively. India was the largest cotton seed producer in the 2023 listed data with 10,600,000 tonnes, followed by China with 9,400,000 tonnes and Brazil with 4,494,600 tonnes. The United States ranked fourth with 3,305,780 tonnes. India holds 25.8 percent of the listed 2023 total. The top three together hold 59.7 percent of the 41,014,242-tonne listed total. Between 2022 and 2023, the common reporter universe (106 countries with data in both years) rose from 39,766,644 tonnes to 41,014,242 tonnes, a change of 1,247,598 tonnes (3.1 percent). The totals listed for each year were 39,766,644 tonnes (107 reporters) and 41,014,242 tonnes (107 reporters); 1 country reporting in 2022 with a reported zero (Slovakia) did not report in 2023, while 1 new reporter added a reported zero (Latvia). Pakistan added 1,598,493 tonnes (up 101.5 percent), India 900,000 tonnes (up 9.3 percent) and Brazil 774,200 tonnes (up 20.8 percent), while the United States fell 699,440 tonnes (down 17.5 percent) and China 600,000 tonnes (down 6.0 percent). The 2019 to 2023 common reporter universe (105 countries with data in both years) moved from 43,270,974 tonnes to 41,014,242 tonnes, a change of -2,256,732 tonnes (-5.2 percent). The totals listed for each year were 43,270,974 tonnes (107 reporters) and 41,014,242 tonnes (107 reporters); 2 reporters present in 2019 with reported zeros (Portugal and Slovakia) are absent in 2023, while 2 new reporters joined with reported zeros (Cyprus and Latvia). The United States fell 2,087,430 tonnes (down 38.7 percent), accounting for 92.5 percent of the decline, while India fell 800,000 tonnes (down 7.0 percent). Australia added 757,173 tonnes (up 110.4 percent) and Uzbekistan 558,000 tonnes (up 37.7 percent). Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals sum FAO Crops and Livestock Products production quantity (Element 5510) for item Cotton seed, 2019-2023. For cotton seed production, quantities below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimals and larger quantities are shown as whole tonnes. The 2023 cotton seed production ranking and shares use 2023 listed quantities. In the cotton seed production data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For cotton seed production changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Production quantities are reported to FAO by national statistical sources.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Slovakia and Latvia sit outside the change universe?
Slovakia reported zero in 2022 and Latvia reported zero in 2023, with neither reporting in the other year. Zero counts as reported, so each belongs to one endpoint year only and drops out of the common reporter universe for the 2022-2023 comparison.
How much of the 2019-2023 decline runs through the United States?
The United States fell 2,087,430 tonnes (down 38.7 percent) against a common-universe decline of 2,256,732 tonnes, accounting for 92.5 percent of the decline. India contributed a further 800,000 tonnes (down 7.0 percent) to the same decline.
Which reporter more than doubled in 2023?
Pakistan rose from 1,574,541 tonnes in 2022 to 3,173,034 tonnes in 2023, a change of 1,598,493 tonnes (up 101.5 percent). Pakistan reports in both years, so the doubling sits inside the change universe.
