Cottonseed Oil Consumption by Country
FAO Food Balances data record 2,934 thousand tonnes of listed cottonseed oil food supply in 2023 across 91 reporters with reported values. India accounts for 1,037 thousand tonnes of that total, ahead of China at 762 thousand tonnes and Brazil at 294 thousand tonnes. Uzbekistan records the highest per-capita food supply at 3.52 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values in individual years.
India leads the 2023 ranking at 1,037 thousand tonnes, 1.36 times China at 762 thousand tonnes. Uzbekistan tops the per-capita ranking at 3.52 kilograms per person per year from 126 thousand tonnes, ahead of Tajikistan at 2.57 kilograms. In 2023, India led listed cottonseed oil food supply at 1,037 thousand tonnes, with China second at 762 thousand tonnes and Brazil third at 294 thousand tonnes. Türkiye followed at 143 thousand tonnes and Uzbekistan at 126 thousand tonnes. Uzbekistan's 3.52 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by Tajikistan at 2.57 kilograms. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 91 reporters with data in both years rose from 2,770 thousand tonnes to 2,934 thousand tonnes, a gain of 164 thousand tonnes (5.9 percent), with India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, China, Ethiopia and Argentina all adding at least 15 thousand tonnes. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has edged down 0.8 percent, as Pakistan's 90-thousand-tonne decline offset gains in China, Uzbekistan, Brazil and Ethiopia. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of cottonseed oil actually eaten. India holds 1,037 thousand tonnes, or 35.3 percent of the 2,934-thousand-tonne listed total. China follows at 762 thousand tonnes (26.0 percent) and Brazil at 294 thousand tonnes (10.0 percent), with Türkiye fourth at 143 thousand tonnes and Uzbekistan fifth at 126 thousand tonnes. The top three reporters account for 71.3 percent of the listed total, while the top five account for 80.5 percent and the top ten account for 90.1 percent. The gap between second and third exceeds the entire listed total of every reporter below fifth place. Among the 91 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 2,770 thousand tonnes to 2,934 thousand tonnes, a gain of 164 thousand tonnes (5.9 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 91 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. India added 73 thousand tonnes (up 7.6 percent), Pakistan added 32 thousand tonnes (up 84.2 percent), Uzbekistan added 22 thousand tonnes (up 21.2 percent), China added 21 thousand tonnes (up 2.8 percent), Ethiopia added 18 thousand tonnes (up 112.5 percent) and Argentina added 15 thousand tonnes (up 750.0 percent), while Ivory Coast fell 13 thousand tonnes (down 36.1 percent) and Spain fell 12 thousand tonnes (down 63.2 percent). For the 87 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply eased from 2,958 thousand tonnes to 2,934 thousand tonnes, a decline of 24 thousand tonnes (0.8 percent). The 2019 total includes 89 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 91; Bhutan and Kiribati, both with reported zeros in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while Belgium, New Caledonia, Suriname and the United Arab Emirates entered with reported zeros. Pakistan fell 90 thousand tonnes (down 56.2 percent), India fell 30 thousand tonnes (down 2.8 percent), the United States fell 30 thousand tonnes (down 24.8 percent) and Myanmar fell 16 thousand tonnes (down 47.1 percent), while China added 75 thousand tonnes (up 10.9 percent), Uzbekistan added 31 thousand tonnes (up 32.6 percent), Brazil added 27 thousand tonnes (up 10.1 percent) and Ethiopia added 27 thousand tonnes (up 385.7 percent). Pakistan's fall from 160 to 70 thousand tonnes is the largest single decline in the window. Per capita, Uzbekistan's 3.52 kilograms from 126 thousand tonnes lead Tajikistan at 2.57 kilograms, while India, first by total, records 0.72 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the cottonseed oil figure used here covers cottonseed oil recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much cottonseed oil people actually consumed. Cottonseed and cottonseed oil are reported separately, so the cottonseed figure should not be treated as the same measure as cottonseed oil food supply. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, India had the largest listed cottonseed oil food supply among the 91 reporters with reported values, at 1,037 thousand tonnes. China ranked second at 762 thousand tonnes, while Brazil ranked third at 294 thousand tonnes. Uzbekistan had the highest per-capita cottonseed oil food supply at 3.52 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of cottonseed oil actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Cottonseed oil from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 93 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 2,934 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 91 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Cottonseed Oil Food Supply at a Glance

Cottonseed Oil Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country had the highest per-capita cottonseed oil food supply in 2023?
Uzbekistan had the highest per-capita cottonseed oil food supply in 2023 at 3.52 kilograms per person per year, followed by Tajikistan at 2.57 kilograms. Why did Pakistan's cottonseed oil food supply fall 56.2 percent since 2019?|The FAO Food Balances data show Pakistan at 160 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 70 thousand tonnes in 2023, but this dataset alone does not establish the cause of the decline. The 90-thousand-tonne decrease was the largest five-year fall in the table.
Is cottonseed oil food supply the same as cottonseed oil eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
