Oil of Sesame Seed Consumption by Country

China reported 267,852 tonnes of sesame seed oil food supply in 2023, 40.2 percent of the listed total. India came second at 58,056 tonnes and Türkiye third at 40,186. Per person, Lebanon led the table. Nigeria added 20,678 tonnes in the latest year, while Iran shed 11,121. All figures count food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

China Alone at the Top

China led at 267,852 tonnes, 4.61 times India. Türkiye, Nigeria and Myanmar followed between 34,473 and 40,186 tonnes, with Uganda sixth at 32,261. The top three held 54.9 percent of the 667,053-tonne total, and the top ten 81.9 percent. Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Mozambique and South Korea closed the top ten between 14,669 and 23,579 tonnes. Of 159 countries in the file, 158 carried a 2023 value.

Nigeria Jumps, Iran Slides

Across the 158 countries in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 1.7 percent, from 656,207 tonnes, a gain of 10,846. Nigeria added 20,678 tonnes, more than doubling from 16,081, exceeding the net rise alone. Iran shed 11,121 tonnes, down 54.2 percent, and Mozambique 6,415. Saudi Arabia added 4,632 tonnes and Myanmar 4,203, while Tanzania added 4,080, up 566.1 percent from 721. Venezuela shed 3,601 tonnes and China 3,583.

A Modest Five-Year Decline

Among the 152 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, supply fell 3.0 percent, from 687,564 tonnes, a loss of 20,591. India shed 16,974 tonnes and Tanzania 15,659, together exceeding the net loss. Mexico added 15,276 tonnes, nearly tripling from 8,303, and Mozambique 10,159. Nigeria shed 9,375 tonnes over five years despite its latest-year jump. South Korea shed 8,897 tonnes, while Lebanon added 6,041, up 350.2 percent from 1,725. Djibouti reported 0.41 tonnes in 2019 with no 2023 value, while six additional countries contributed 79 tonnes to the 2023 total.

Uganda Ranks High on Both Measures

Uganda sat sixth at 32,261 tonnes and fourth per person at 1.82 grams, one of two countries in both top listings alongside Myanmar. Myanmar sat fifth at 34,473 tonnes and fifth per person at 1.74 grams. Mozambique, ninth at 15,949 tonnes, shed 6,415 in the latest year yet added 10,159 over five. South Korea, tenth at 14,669 tonnes, shed 8,897 over five years.

Nigeria's Round Trip

Nigeria fell from 46,134 tonnes in 2019 to 16,081 in 2022, then jumped to 36,759 in 2023. Its five-year loss of 9,375 tonnes hides a latest-year jump that exceeded the net gain. Per person, Nigeria sat at 0.44 grams, far from Lebanon's 3.69. The round trip leaves Nigeria below its 2019 level despite the rebound.

Lebanon Leads Per Person

Lebanon's 3.69 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Jordan at 1.94 and Saudi Arabia at 1.85. Uganda and Myanmar followed at 1.82 and 1.74 grams, pairing top-ten volumes with top-five per-person places. China, the volume leader, sat at 0.52 grams per person. Türkiye paired third by volume with 1.26 grams.
