Diatomite Production by Country
Diatomite production by country measures how much diatomite each country produces, expressed in thousand metric tons. Diatomite is a sedimentary mineral composed of fossilized diatoms, a type of algae, mined for filtration, insulation, and absorbent applications. The statistics are based on USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table below lists 13 countries with 2024 and 2025 data available for all of them. The United States figures are withheld to avoid disclosing company proprietary data.
Denmark produced the most diatomite in 2025 with 380 thousand metric tons. France ranked second with 250, followed by Argentina (190), Türkiye (150), China (140), South Korea (120), Mexico (100), Peru (99), Germany (50), Russia (50), Spain (50), Japan (40), and New Zealand (40). Among the 13 countries with available 2025 data, Denmark accounted for about 23 percent of the reported production values, and Denmark and France together accounted for about 38 percent. Only Denmark produced more than 300 thousand metric tons in 2025. In Europe, Denmark (380 thousand metric tons) is the largest producer, ahead of France (250), Germany (50), Russia (50), and Spain (50). In the Americas, Argentina (190) leads, ahead of Mexico (100), Peru (99), and the United States (withheld). In Asia, China (140) leads, ahead of Japan (40). In Oceania, New Zealand (40) is the only listed producer, and in Africa no producers are listed. Türkiye (150) is the only listed producer in the Middle East. Diatomite production is spread across many small producers: no country reaches 400 thousand metric tons, and the largest producer alone accounts for 23 percent of the reported total. The 13 listed producers range from 380 down to 40 thousand metric tons, a difference of roughly one order of magnitude. Argentina recorded the only increase, rising from 185 thousand metric tons in 2024 to 190 in 2025 (up 5). Twelve of the thirteen countries held exactly the same output in both years. Since no country declined, Argentina's 5 thousand metric ton increase explains the entire net change. Total reported production among the 13 listed countries rose from 1,654 thousand metric tons in 2024 to 1,659 in 2025, an increase of 5 thousand metric tons, or about 0.3 percent, driven entirely by Argentina.
