Dried Mushrooms Consumption by Country

China reported 4,245,634 tonnes of dried mushroom food supply in 2023, 97.6 percent of the listed total. India came second at 22,308 tonnes and Hong Kong third at 12,179. Per person, China led at 8.18 grams a day. China added 165,742 tonnes in the latest year, while Hong Kong fell back. All figures count food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

China accounted for 97.6 percent of the 2023 listed total of dried mushroom food supply and also led on a per-person basis. The listed total of 4,348,817 tonnes rose 22.5 percent between 2019 and 2023 and 3.8 percent in the latest year.

China Dominates the 2023 Total

China led at 4,245,634 tonnes, 190.32 times India. Hong Kong sat third at 12,179 tonnes, ahead of the Netherlands at 9,931 and Thailand at 7,241. The top three held 98.4 percent of the 4,348,817-tonne total, and the top five 98.8 percent. Malaysia, South Africa, Vietnam, Iran and South Korea closed the top ten between 4,413 and 7,215 tonnes. Of 167 countries in the file, 164 carried a 2023 value.

China Adds, Hong Kong Falls

Across the 164 countries in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 3.8 percent, from 4,188,263 tonnes, a gain of 160,554. China added 165,742 tonnes, up 4.1 percent, exceeding the net rise alone. Hong Kong shed 10,250 tonnes, down 45.7 percent. India added 3,731 tonnes, up 20.1 percent. South Africa added 2,978 tonnes, nearly doubling from 3,128. Thailand shed 2,123 tonnes, down 22.7 percent. Malaysia added 1,017 tonnes, while Vietnam added 828 and the United States 522.

China Adds Most Over Five Years

Among the 159 countries in both 2019 and 2023, supply grew 22.5 percent, from 3,549,770 tonnes, a gain of 799,031. China added 807,097 tonnes, up 23.5 percent, more than the net rise. India added 14,614 tonnes, nearly tripling from 7,694. Thailand shed 14,475 tonnes, down 66.7 percent. The Netherlands added 9,855 tonnes, rising from just 76 in 2019. Hong Kong shed 8,807 tonnes, down 42.0 percent. Three countries left over the period, against five arrivals overall.

India Holds Second

India sat second at 22,308 tonnes, adding 3,731 in the latest year and 14,614 from 7,694 over five. Hong Kong, third at 12,179 tonnes, shed 10,250 lately and 8,807 from 20,986 over five. Per person, Hong Kong sat second at 4.48 grams. The Netherlands, fourth at 9,931 tonnes, added 9,855 over five years from 76.

Thailand Holds Fifth

Thailand sat fifth at 7,241 tonnes, shedding 2,123 in the latest year and 14,475 from 21,716 over five. Malaysia, sixth at 7,215 tonnes, added 1,017 lately. South Africa, seventh at 6,106 tonnes, added 2,978 in the latest year. Vietnam, eighth at 5,417 tonnes, added 828 lately. Iran, ninth at 5,110 tonnes, sits outside the per-person top ten.

China Leads Per Person Too

China's 8.18 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Hong Kong at 4.48 and the Netherlands at 1.50. Macau followed at 1.29 grams and Malaysia at 0.56. India, second by volume, sat at 0.04 grams per person. Thailand, fifth by volume at 7,241 tonnes, sat at 0.28 grams.
