Eggplants Consumption by Country

China reported 37,272,942 tonnes of eggplant food supply in 2023, 66.1 percent of the listed total. India came second at 11,715,403 tonnes and Egypt third at 1,688,145. Per person, Guyana led at 145.47 grams per person per day. China added 913,992 tonnes in the latest year, while Egypt shed 102,165. All figures describe food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

Key answer: China had by far the largest eggplant food supply in 2023, with 37,272,942 tonnes, equal to 66.1 percent of the 56,400,489-tonne listed total. India ranked second at 11,715,403 tonnes and Egypt third at 1,688,145 tonnes. Guyana had the highest supply per person at 145.47 grams per person per day.

China Holds Two-Thirds

China led at 37,272,942 tonnes, 3.18 times India. Egypt sat third at 1,688,145 tonnes, ahead of Indonesia at 690,229 and Bangladesh at 680,699. The top three held 89.9 percent of the 56,400,489-tonne total, and the top five 92.3 percent. Iran, Türkiye, Italy, the Philippines and Uzbekistan closed the top ten between 203,522 and 522,486 tonnes. Of 162 countries in the file, 158 carried a 2023 value.

China Adds Most, Iran Jumps

Across the 157 countries in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 2.0 percent, from 55,304,031 tonnes, a gain of 1,096,443. China added 913,992 tonnes, up 2.5 percent, most of the net rise. Iran added 144,556 tonnes, up 38.2 percent. Egypt shed 102,165 tonnes, down 5.7 percent, and Iraq shed 96,282 tonnes. Bangladesh added 62,673 tonnes. Morocco added 45,463 tonnes, nearly doubling from 48,921. Pakistan added 40,529 tonnes, while Türkiye added 32,193.

China and Egypt Drive Five Years

Among the 149 countries in both 2019 and 2023, supply grew 8.8 percent, from 51,163,772 tonnes, a gain of 4,524,545. China added 3,478,276 tonnes, up 10.3 percent, over three-quarters of the net rise. Egypt added 462,036 tonnes, up 37.7 percent. Uzbekistan added 188,622 tonnes from 14,900, a rise of more than twelve-fold. Indonesia added 163,214 tonnes. Iran added 94,851 tonnes over five years, up 22.2 percent. Saudi Arabia added 67,258 tonnes, up 176.7 percent. Mexico shed 99,482 tonnes, down 94.7 percent from 105,105. India added 97,354 tonnes.

Indonesia Holds Fourth

Indonesia ranked fourth at 690,229 tonnes, adding 163,214 over five years, up 31.0 percent from 527,015. Bangladesh ranked fifth at 680,699 tonnes, up 62,673 from 618,026 a year earlier. Iran ranked sixth at 522,486 tonnes, after adding 144,556 tonnes in the latest year. Türkiye ranked seventh at 518,726 tonnes, adding 32,193 in the latest year.

Iraq Falls Fast

Iraq shed 96,282 tonnes in the latest year, down 40.1 percent from 239,947, the sharpest fall among the top ten. Pakistan added 40,529 tonnes lately.

Guyana Leads Per Person

Guyana's 145.47 grams per person per day topped the per-person table, ahead of China at 71.78 grams per person per day and Armenia at 47.94 grams per person per day. Egypt sat at 40.38 grams per person per day after holding third by volume. Albania followed at 29.54 grams per person per day and Azerbaijan at 25.37 grams per person per day. India, second by volume, sat at 22.32 grams per person per day.
