Dried figs crowd the top: Morocco led 2023 with 25,990 tonnes, only 16.7 percent of the listed consumption total. India followed at 22,373 tonnes and the United States at 20,466, while Montenegro led per person at 2.86 grams. The 2023 figures total 155,884 tonnes across 136 countries, 130 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.
Morocco had the largest listed dried fig food supply in 2023 at 25,990 tonnes, followed by India at 22,373 tonnes and the United States at 20,466 tonnes. Morocco accounted for 16.7 percent of the 155,884-tonne total reported across 130 countries with a 2023 value. Montenegro ranked first on a per-person basis at 2.86 grams per person per day.
The leading countries were not separated by a huge margin: the top three accounted for 44.2 percent of the annual listed supply, while the top five reached 54.9 percent. Compared with 2022, the 125 countries reported in both years increased their combined total by 1.4 percent. Over the full 2019-2023 period, the 114 countries present at both endpoints increased their combined supply by 14.5 percent.
Key Takeaway
In 2023, Morocco had the largest listed food supply of dried figs at 25,990 tonnes, followed by India at 22,373 tonnes and the United States at 20,466 tonnes. Montenegro had the highest listed supply per person at 2.86 grams per person per day. Across the 130 countries with a reported 2023 value, the total listed supply was 155,884 tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption in FAO Supply Utilization Accounts, not the amount actually eaten.
Türkiye placed fourth at 9,309 tonnes, with Algeria fifth at 7,398 and France sixth at 7,144. Italy, Tunisia, Germany and Russia closed the top ten between 4,350 and 6,281 tonnes. The top three held 44.2 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top five 54.9 percent. Morocco had the highest listed food supply at 25,990 tonnes, while Montenegro had the highest per-capita food supply at 2.86 grams per person. India added 8,115 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, rising 56.9 percent to 22,373 tonnes. Türkiye added 6,511 tonnes, up 232.7 percent to 9,309 tonnes. The United States added 2,994 tonnes, up 17.1 percent. Morocco added 2,123 tonnes, up 8.9 percent. Kazakhstan lost 6,629 tonnes, down 84.7 percent to 1,195 tonnes. Syria shed 2,821 tonnes, down 53.1 percent. Russia lost 1,817 tonnes, down 29.5 percent. Afghanistan went from 1,527 tonnes to a reported zero. The 125 countries present in both years moved from 152,531 tonnes to 154,730 tonnes, up 2,199 tonnes, or 1.4 percent, with five arrivals carrying 1,154 tonnes. Between 2019 and 2023, the 114 countries present in both years advanced from 135,110 tonnes to 154,703 tonnes, up 19,593 tonnes, or 14.5 percent. India added 12,860 tonnes, up 135.2 percent, accounting for 65.6 percent of the net gain. Türkiye added 9,242 tonnes from a tiny base. The United States added 6,365 tonnes, up 45.1 percent. Russia added 4,350 tonnes from a zero base. Syria added 1,834 tonnes, up 276.9 percent. Morocco lost 8,146 tonnes, down 23.9 percent. Iran shed 1,920 tonnes, down 64.1 percent, and Greece 1,801 tonnes, down 95.5 percent. Six countries left with 1,509 tonnes, against 16 arrivals with 1,180. Montenegro's 2.86 grams a day edged Albania's 2.34, with Morocco third at 1.89 and Tunisia fourth at 1.20. Denmark followed at 0.79 grams, with Cyprus at 0.65 and Macau at 0.51. Hong Kong, Algeria and Malta sat below half a gram. Morocco, first by volume, placed only third per person. Small Mediterranean tables set a pace the tonnage giants cannot match. Dried figs for human consumption are logged in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Three holders are relatively close at the top, making large year-to-year changes enough to reshape the ranking. The per-person ranking differs markedly from the volume ranking, with small-population countries ahead on a per-gram basis. Türkiye's 13,819.0 percent five-year increase is driven by a starting point of just 66.88 tonnes, so the percentage describes a small-base change rather than a comparable rise from an established level. Afghanistan's zero follows 1,527 tonnes, a small exit far from the top ten that needs no warning. Kazakhstan's 84.7 percent latest fall lands on a minor base too. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts treat tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for dried figs across 2019-2023. Percentages anchor on the earlier year, and zero bases receive no percentage. The universe gathers 136 countries once aggregates are gone, 130 with 2023 values. Only countries reported at both endpoints are included in endpoint comparisons, including countries with reported zero values. The 2023 listed total of 155,884 tonnes is the sum of the 130 countries with a 2023 value. Reported zeros are kept, blanks are missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Who trails Montenegro per person?
Montenegro clearly led dried figs per person in 2023, just above second-placed Albania at 2.34 grams with Morocco next at 1.89 grams a day overall.
How tight is the top three?
Very tight: Morocco alone held only 16.7 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top three together reached 44.2 percent of reported supply.
How much did India add lately?
India added 8,115 tonnes, up 56.9 percent in the latest year to 22,373 tonnes, the biggest single latest-year gain among all countries in the file.
Is this what people actually ate?
No. The figures measure food available for human consumption in the reference year, not actual intake, so eaten amounts stay below supply in every case.
Where did Türkiye come from?
Türkiye added 9,242 tonnes from 66.88 tonnes in 2019 to reach fourth place in 2023. The percentage is not especially useful because the 2019 starting point was only 66.88 tonnes.
