Figs Consumption by Country

Egypt eats figs at scale: 179,843 tonnes in 2023, 29.6 percent of the annual listed consumption total. Algeria followed at 85,513 tonnes and Morocco at 43,570, while Albania led per person at 13.6 grams a day. The 2023 figures total 607,698 tonnes across 141 countries, 131 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.

Egypt is the biggest Figs consumer in 2023, holding a 29.6-percent share of the listed total. The 2023 listed total reaches 607,698 tonnes. Algeria sits second with 85,513 tonnes. Albania leads the per-person table. Egypt recorded the largest latest-year decline, losing 13,036 tonnes, or 6.8 percent.

China placed fourth at 32,688 tonnes, with Saudi Arabia fifth at 26,726 and Uzbekistan sixth at 25,233. Syria, Brazil, Albania and India closed the top ten between 13,623 and 24,535 tonnes. The top three held 50.8 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top five 60.6 percent. Egypt had the highest listed food supply at 179,843 tonnes, while Albania had the highest per-capita food supply at 13.6 grams per person.

• Egypt recorded the largest decline: down 13,036 tonnes, or 6.8 percent.
• China posted the largest increase: up 6,781 tonnes, or 26.2 percent.
• Morocco increased by 3,464 tonnes, or 8.6 percent, remaining third.
• Saudi Arabia added 2,805 tonnes, or 11.7 percent, to hold fifth place.

Egypt Keeps the Lead as Fig Supply Barely Changes

Egypt lost 13,036 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 6.8 percent to 179,843 tonnes. Germany lost 2,548 tonnes, down 26.7 percent. Türkiye lost 2,036 tonnes, down 26.8 percent. China added 6,781 tonnes, up 26.2 percent. Morocco added 3,464 tonnes, up 8.6 percent. Saudi Arabia added 2,805 tonnes, up 11.7 percent. Kuwait added 2,121 tonnes, up 68.0 percent. Brazil added 2,002 tonnes, up 14.4 percent. The 130 countries present in both years moved from 604,154 tonnes to 607,697 tonnes, up 3,543 tonnes, or 0.6 percent, with one arrival holding a single tonne.

Saudi Arabia's Five-Year Rise

Between 2019 and 2023, the 120 countries present in both years grew from 587,890 tonnes to 607,692 tonnes, up 19,802 tonnes, or 3.4 percent. Saudi Arabia added 26,726 tonnes from a zero base. Uzbekistan added 22,551 tonnes, up 840.8 percent. China added 18,030 tonnes, up 123.0 percent. Kuwait added 3,774 tonnes, up 257.4 percent. Iran lost 20,227 tonnes, down 83.2 percent. Egypt lost 17,853 tonnes, down 9.0 percent. Morocco shed 12,589 tonnes, down 22.4 percent. Russia fell 5,464 tonnes, down 93.1 percent. Eight countries left with 1,603 tonnes, against 11 arrivals with 6.

Albania Runs Away with Figs per Person

Albania's 13.6 grams a day more than doubled Algeria's 5.07 in second. Montenegro sat third at 4.61 grams, with Egypt at 4.30 and Libya at 3.52. Morocco, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kuwait, Azerbaijan and Syria followed below 3.2 grams. Egypt ranked first by total supply but only fourth per person, while Albania led the per-person table by a wide margin.

What the Figs Data Covers

Figs for human consumption are counted in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country from 2019 to 2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Egypt, Algeria and Morocco account for much of the total supply, while Albania and other smaller markets rank much higher on a per-person basis.

Saudi Arabia's fifth-place volume comes from a zero base, so no percentage is stated for its arrival at fifth place. Uzbekistan's 840.8 percent rate starts at 2,682 tonnes and means rapid scaling.
