Fish and Seafood Consumption by Country
China held 59,292 thousand tonnes of listed fish and seafood food supply in 2023, 38.4 percent of a 154,549-thousand-tonne total. Every reporter's 2023 quantity equals its 2022 value, so the reported year-to-year change is exactly zero. Over five years the total rose 1.6 percent, with China and India together contributing more than the net gain while Egypt, Nigeria and Indonesia declined. Iceland leads per person at 83.81 kilograms per person per year, based on 32 thousand tonnes of listed food supply.
China leads at 59,292 thousand tonnes, 4.72 times India at 12,554, with Indonesia third at 11,365 and the United States fourth at 7,537. The highest per-capita values are concentrated among island reporters: Iceland at 83.81 kilograms from 32 thousand tonnes, then Maldives at 79.74 and Kiribati at 72.28 kilograms. China, first by total, records 41.68 kilograms per person. The fish and seafood aggregate covers the fish and seafood items in the FAO Food Balances classification, including freshwater, demersal, pelagic and other marine fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, molluscs and other aquatic animals. Aquatic plants are recorded separately under their own item and article. The 2022 and 2023 quantity values are identical for all 176 reporters with values in both years, so the year-to-year comparison is empty and the five-year window carries the analysis. China and India together added 2,493 thousand tonnes against a net gain of 2,393, with Egypt, Nigeria and Indonesia offsetting part of their combined increase. The 2023 table is led by China at 59,292 thousand tonnes, with India second at 12,554 and Indonesia third at 11,365. The United States and Bangladesh complete the top five at 7,537 and 4,627 thousand tonnes, respectively. China holds 38.4 percent of the 154,549-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 53.8 percent of the listed total, the top five 61.7 percent and the top ten 71.7 percent. Per capita, Iceland's 83.81 kilograms per person per year from 32 thousand tonnes lead Maldives at 79.74 kilograms, while the United States, fourth by total, records 21.94 kilograms. Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply stands at 154,549 thousand tonnes in both years, a change of zero (0.0 percent). The two years share the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. Every reporter's 2023 quantity value equals its 2022 value, while per-capita figures differ slightly because population denominators changed. This pattern matches the fish detail tables, where 2023 quantities also repeat 2022 across reporters. This pattern is consistent with the quantities being carried forward in the dataset, rather than demonstrating measured stability in fish and seafood supply. For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 152,156 thousand tonnes to 154,549 thousand tonnes, a gain of 2,393 thousand tonnes (1.6 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 68 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 1,389 thousand tonnes (up 2.4 percent), India added 1,104 thousand tonnes (up 9.6 percent), Bangladesh added 240 thousand tonnes (up 5.5 percent) and Vietnam added 144 thousand tonnes (up 3.7 percent), while Egypt fell 418 thousand tonnes (down 15.1 percent), Nigeria fell 218 thousand tonnes (down 12.2 percent), Indonesia fell 179 thousand tonnes (down 1.6 percent) and Spain fell 130 thousand tonnes (down 6.9 percent). China contributes 58.0 percent of the five-year net increase and India 46.1 percent, so the two together account for 104.1 percent of a net gain smaller than their combined increase. Egypt's fall from 2,766 to 2,348 thousand tonnes is the largest absolute five-year decline. The numbers in this article come from the Fish, Seafood item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A combined fish and seafood total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. The aggregate sums the fish and seafood items, and several of those items are also covered in separate articles. The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why fish and seafood look concentrated in populous countries by total but in island reporters per person. In 2023, FAO Food Balances recorded 154,549 thousand tonnes of listed fish and seafood food supply across 176 reporters with reported values. China had the largest total at 59,292 thousand tonnes, followed by India at 12,554 and Indonesia at 11,365 thousand tonnes. Iceland had the highest per-capita fish and seafood food supply at 83.81 kilograms per person per year. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of fish and seafood actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Fish, Seafood from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 154,549 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the fish and seafood aggregate; individual fish and seafood items are treated in separate articles.Fish and Seafood Food Supply at a Glance

Fish and Seafood Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the 2022-2023 change exactly zero?
Every reporter's 2023 quantity value equals its 2022 value across all 176 reporters in the comparison, so the listed total stands at 154,549 thousand tonnes in both years. The zero change reflects carried-forward values in the dataset rather than measured stability. Per-capita figures differ slightly because population denominators changed.
Why do China and India account for more than the net five-year gain?
China added 1,389 thousand tonnes and India 1,104 between 2019 and 2023, together 2,493 thousand tonnes against a net gain of 2,393. Declines in Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia and Spain absorbed the difference. Shares above 100 percent are possible whenever large declines offset large gains.
Is the food supply of fish and seafood the same as fish eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
