Foreign Direct Investment by Country (Current US$)

Foreign direct investment (FDI) net inflows measure the value of direct investment that foreign investors make in a country's economy, net of divestment, in a given year, expressed in current US dollars. It includes equity capital, reinvested earnings, and other capital flows from foreign investors, minus reverse investment and divestments. A positive value means a country receives more foreign direct investment than it sends abroad, while a negative value indicates net outflows. The dataset covers 197 countries and territories with values from 2020 to 2025 and shows how FDI destinations have shifted across the world economy.

Countries With the Largest FDI Inflows in 2025

The United States recorded by far the largest net FDI inflows in 2025 at 400.5 billion US dollars, followed by Singapore with 159.1 billion. Germany ranked third with 95.2 billion, ahead of China (80.0 billion) and Brazil (77.7 billion). The United Kingdom (76.6 billion), France (73.0 billion), Canada (69.0 billion), Japan (45.8 billion), and Mexico (43.1 billion) complete the top ten.

The United States alone accounts for 29.7 percent of total net FDI inflows recorded across the 97 countries with 2025 data, and the top three countries together represent 48.6 percent of the total. The five largest recipients account for 60.3 percent, while the top ten represent 83.2 percent of the total. India (39.1 billion), Australia (36.5 billion), Saudi Arabia (32.6 billion), and Spain (28.1 billion) also record inflows above 25 billion dollars.

Among the 97 countries with 2025 data, 84 recorded net inflows while 13 recorded net outflows. Hong Kong, which recorded inflows of 125.8 billion in 2024, its latest available year, and Ireland (4.8 billion in 2024) do not have 2025 figures in this dataset and are therefore not included in the 2025 ranking.

Largest Net FDI Outflows in 2025

Luxembourg recorded the largest net FDI outflow in 2025 at 93.9 billion US dollars, followed by Hungary with 69.9 billion and Belgium with 28.8 billion. Switzerland recorded a net outflow of 12.3 billion, ahead of Austria (11.7 billion) and Norway (7.8 billion). South Africa (2.2 billion), Kazakhstan (0.9 billion), Estonia (0.8 billion), and Trinidad and Tobago (0.8 billion) also recorded net outflows in 2025.

FDI Inflows Around the World

In Asia, Singapore leads with 159.1 billion in 2025, followed by China (80.0 billion) and Japan (45.8 billion). India (39.1 billion), Saudi Arabia (32.6 billion), Israel (26.2 billion), and Indonesia (22.3 billion) also record inflows above 20 billion. Hong Kong's latest available figure is 125.8 billion in 2024.

In Europe, Germany leads, followed by the United Kingdom (76.6 billion) and France (73.0 billion). Spain (28.1 billion), Poland (20.0 billion), and Sweden (19.1 billion) also record inflows above 18 billion, while Luxembourg recorded net FDI outflows of 93.9 billion US dollars, followed by Hungary (69.9 billion) and Belgium (28.8 billion).

In the Americas, the United States leads with 400.5 billion, followed by Brazil (77.7 billion), Canada (69.0 billion), and Mexico (43.1 billion). In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia (32.6 billion) and Israel (26.2 billion) lead, while in Africa, Egypt records the largest inflow at 15.5 billion in 2025, followed by Nigeria (4.0 billion) and Morocco (3.3 billion).

Largest Increases in FDI Inflows, 2020–2025

The United States recorded the largest absolute increase in net FDI inflows between 2020 and 2025, rising from 137.1 billion to 400.5 billion US dollars, an increase of 263.5 billion. Switzerland recorded the largest improvement from a negative base, moving from a net outflow of 238.6 billion in 2020 to an outflow of 12.3 billion in 2025, an improvement of 226.3 billion. Cyprus moved from a net outflow of 75.6 billion to inflows of 11.2 billion (plus 86.8 billion), while Singapore recorded an increase of 79.8 billion (from 79.3 to 159.1 billion).

France recorded the fifth largest increase at 53.7 billion (from 19.4 to 73.0 billion), followed by Canada (29.1 to 69.0 billion, plus 39.9 billion), Brazil (38.3 to 77.7 billion, plus 39.4 billion), and Saudi Arabia (1.6 to 32.6 billion, plus 31.0 billion).

Largest Decreases in FDI Inflows, 2020–2025

Hungary recorded the largest decline, moving from net inflows of 167.4 billion in 2020 to a net outflow of 69.9 billion in 2025, a swing of 237.3 billion. China recorded the second largest decline, with inflows falling from 253.1 billion in 2020 to 80.0 billion in 2025, a decrease of 173.1 billion. Luxembourg's net outflows widened from 3.4 billion to 93.9 billion (minus 90.5 billion), while Germany recorded a decline of 81.6 billion (from 176.8 to 95.2 billion) and the United Kingdom a decline of 80.6 billion (from 157.2 to 76.6 billion).

Methodology

The statistics are based on the World Bank World Development Indicators dataset, indicator BX.KLT.DINV.CD.WD (Foreign direct investment, net inflows, BoP, current US$). The main comparison uses 2025 data where available, covering 97 of the 197 countries and territories in our dataset. For countries without a 2025 observation, the latest available year is noted where relevant, but earlier years are not substituted for missing 2025 values in the ranking. Negative values indicate net outflows of foreign direct investment. Values are expressed in current US dollars and are not adjusted for inflation. Missing observations are treated as missing, not as zero.
