Trade Balance by Country (Current US$)

The external balance on goods and services measures the difference between the value of a country's exports and its imports of goods and services in a given year, expressed in current US dollars. A positive balance indicates a trade surplus, meaning a country sells more to the rest of the world than it buys, while a negative balance indicates a trade deficit. The dataset covers 184 countries and territories with values from 2020 to 2025 and shows how surpluses and deficits have shifted across the world economy over this period.

Countries With the Largest Trade Surpluses in 2025

China recorded by far the largest trade surplus of goods and services in 2025 at 816.2 billion US dollars, well ahead of any other country. Ireland ranked second with 289.9 billion, followed by Singapore with 213.8 billion. The Netherlands (149.5 billion), Germany (119.0 billion), South Korea (96.7 billion), Switzerland (93.3 billion), Spain (72.9 billion), Russia (69.1 billion), and Norway (62.1 billion) complete the top ten.

Among the 138 countries with 2025 data, 58 recorded a trade surplus while 80 recorded a deficit. China alone accounts for a substantial share of the total surplus of all countries with positive balances, reflecting the scale of its exporting economy. The United States, which recorded a deficit of 898.5 billion dollars in 2024, and Japan, with a deficit of 37.4 billion in 2024, do not have 2025 figures in this dataset and are therefore not included in the 2025 ranking.

Largest Trade Deficits in 2025

India recorded the largest trade deficit of goods and services in 2025 at 68.9 billion US dollars, followed by the Philippines with 66.7 billion and Ukraine with 56.8 billion. The United Kingdom recorded the fourth largest deficit at 50.6 billion, ahead of Egypt (42.7 billion), Iran (31.7 billion), Pakistan (29.4 billion), and Bangladesh (26.1 billion). Colombia (24.7 billion) and Romania (22.5 billion) complete the ten largest deficits with 2025 data.

Trade Balances Around the World

In Asia, China leads with a surplus of 816.2 billion, followed by Singapore (213.8 billion) and South Korea (96.7 billion). Among Asian economies with 2025 data, India records the largest deficit (68.9 billion), ahead of the Philippines (66.7 billion) and Pakistan (29.4 billion). In Europe, Ireland and the Netherlands record the largest surpluses, while the United Kingdom records the largest deficit (50.6 billion).

In the Americas, the United States has no 2025 figure, with its latest available balance showing a deficit of 898.5 billion US dollars in 2024. Among countries with 2025 data, Peru records the largest trade surplus at 27.2 billion, followed by Chile with 14.8 billion. Brazil records a surplus of 8.0 billion, while Canada records a deficit of 19.6 billion and Mexico a deficit of 11.6 billion. In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia records a surplus of 20.1 billion, and in Africa, Egypt records the largest deficit (42.7 billion) while Algeria records the second largest (15.2 billion).

Largest Changes in Trade Balances, 2020–2025

China recorded the largest improvement in its trade balance between 2020 and 2025, with the surplus rising from 330.1 billion to 816.2 billion US dollars, an increase of 486.1 billion. Ireland recorded the second largest improvement (90.9 to 289.9 billion, plus 199.1 billion), followed by Singapore (109.9 to 213.8 billion, plus 103.9 billion) and Norway, which moved from a deficit of 2.6 billion in 2020 to a surplus of 62.1 billion in 2025.

Germany recorded the largest deterioration, with its surplus falling from 209.1 billion in 2020 to 119.0 billion in 2025, a decline of 90.1 billion. The United Kingdom moved from a surplus of 20.1 billion in 2020 to a deficit of 50.6 billion in 2025, a swing of 70.7 billion, while India's deficit widened from 10.5 billion to 68.9 billion over the same period.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the World Bank World Development Indicators dataset, indicator NE.RSB.GNFS.CD (External balance on goods and services, current US$). The main comparison uses 2025 data where available, covering 138 of the 184 countries and territories in our dataset. For countries without a 2025 observation, the latest available year is noted where relevant, but earlier years are not substituted for missing 2025 values in the ranking. Values are expressed in current US dollars and are not adjusted for inflation. Missing observations are treated as missing, not as zero.
