Fossil Fuel Capacity by Country
Fossil fuel capacity by country measures installed fossil-fuel power plant capacity for each country, in gigawatts (GW). The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 215 countries, with 211 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 4,757.08 GW in 2024, up from 4,676.04 GW in 2023.
China (1,444.45 GW) held over 30% of world fossil capacity in 2024 — about twice the United States (710.88 GW). India (315.02 GW), Russia (217.06 GW) and Japan (187.00 GW) completed the top five. China accounted for about 30.4% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 45.3%, the top three about 51.9%, the top five about 60.4%, and the top ten about 70.5%. China (+3.9%) and India (+1.0%) expanded while the United States (-0.9%) and Germany (-0.4%) declined among the top ten. Russia and Saudi Arabia held exactly steady, while Japan added just 0.02 GW. China added 54.13 GW, accounting for about two-thirds of the world’s 81.04 GW net increase. The United States recorded the largest decline among reported country pairs, falling by 6.41 GW. Reported world values were 4,409.43 GW in 2019, 4,489.50 GW in 2020, 4,602.73 GW in 2021, 4,626.66 GW in 2022, 4,676.04 GW in 2023 and 4,757.08 GW in 2024. Capacity ended about 7.9% above the 2019 level, with the world total increasing in every year shown. Fossil plants accounted for about 48.8% of the world's electricity generation capacity in 2024, with 4,757.08 GW out of the 9,758.33 GW total. China accounted for 30.4% of global fossil capacity, while its share of renewable capacity was higher at 41.1%. China therefore had a major presence in both fossil and renewable generation capacity worldwide. The ranking reflects installed fossil capacity, not electricity generated. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual installed fossil fuel capacity in gigawatts (GW). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers fossil capacity only; other sources and generation are reported separately in the source.
