Solar, Tide, Wave and Fuel Cell Capacity by Country

Solar, tide, wave and fuel cell capacity by country measures installed capacity from these technologies for each country, in gigawatts (GW). In practice, the series is overwhelmingly solar, with tide, wave and fuel cells accounting for only a small fraction of the total. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 208 countries, with 204 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 1,863.86 GW in 2024, up from 1,414.87 GW in 2023.

China (886.66 GW) held nearly half of world capacity in 2024 — about 5.0 times the United States (176.68 GW). India (97.38 GW), Japan (91.61 GW) and Germany (89.94 GW) completed the top five.

China accounted for about 47.6% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 57.1%, the top three about 62.3%, the top five about 72.0%, and the top ten about 82.4%.

China added more capacity than any other country

China added 276.74 GW in 2024, increasing its capacity by 45.4%. That single-year addition was equivalent to about 62% of the 448.99 GW increase in the world total. India grew by 33.7%, the United States by 26.4%, Brazil by 40.0% and Germany by 20.1%. Ukraine was the largest decliner among reported country pairs, losing 2.56 GW, or 31.8%.

Growth spread across the major markets

China (+45.4%), Brazil (+40.0%), India (+33.7%) and the United States (+26.4%) all expanded at double-digit rates, with Germany (+20.1%) close behind. Ukraine's -31.8% was the largest absolute decline in the table. China added nearly two-thirds of the net world increase, but the ranking order among the leading countries did not change.

Solar capacity more than tripled since 2019

Reported world values were 591.43 GW in 2019, 725.26 GW in 2020, 868.97 GW in 2021, 1,068.09 GW in 2022, 1,414.87 GW in 2023 and 1,863.86 GW in 2024. Capacity ended about 215.2% above the 2019 level, with the annual increase in installed capacity becoming larger each year.

Solar accounts for virtually the entire series

Solar capacity accounted for 1,863.37 GW of the 1,863.86 GW combined total in 2024, or virtually the entire series. Tide, wave and fuel cells together contributed less than 0.5 GW worldwide. The result is a ranking that is overwhelmingly driven by solar installations rather than by the smaller technologies included in the EIA category. The figures represent installed capacity, not electricity generation.

Solar has become a major part of renewable capacity

The 1,863.86 GW reported in this series represented about 42.1% of the 4,421.96 GW of renewable capacity worldwide in 2024. Because solar accounts for virtually all of the series, the comparison highlights how large solar power has become within the global renewable capacity mix. Its rapid expansion has been a major contributor to the growth of total renewable capacity over the period.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual installed solar, tide, wave and fuel-cell capacity in gigawatts (GW). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers the combined solar, tide, wave and fuel-cell series; the individual technologies are also reported separately in the source.
