Gemstone Reserves by Country
All but one of the gemstone values were first reported in 2024, leaving the ranking with no history beyond two years. USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2019-2026 provide the underlying figures, which capture estimated quantities that can be economically extracted. Listed reserves totaled 1,553,000 thousand carats in 2025.
Russia's 750,000 thousand carats fall just short of the other six countries combined (803,000). Botswana (250,000) is second, while DR Congo and Angola tie for third at 150,000 each. A further 120,000 thousand carats sits under Other countries, unassigned to individual states. The world total is given as more than 2,000,000 thousand carats. Russia cut 240,000 while everyone else held flat or edged up. Six of the seven countries entered with 2024 values and simply repeated them: Botswana 250,000, Angola and DR Congo 150,000 each, Canada 110,000. Zimbabwe joined a year later with 56,000 — the only new name in 2025. With no pre-2024 series, the table offers only one year-to-year change to analyze. Russia dropped from 990,000 to 750,000 thousand carats (-24.2%), removing 240,000 — nearly the entire reserves of second-ranked Botswana. South Africa's nudge from 85,000 to 87,000 (+2.4%) was the sole increase; the other five reported values did not move at all. Figures come from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2019-2026, with 2025 values estimated. Units are thousands of carats, exactly as reported. Empty means the source reported no value; 0 means the source reports zero. The source’s world total, where published, may be rounded, approximate, a lower bound, or a textual estimate, so shares are computed against the sum of the listed countries. Reserves and production are different measures and should not be combined without equalizing units.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are gemstone reserves?
Gemstone reserves are estimated quantities of gemstones that can be economically extracted under applicable conditions, in thousands of carats. Production measures the amount mined in a year.
Which countries hold the most gemstone reserves?
Russia (750,000 thousand carats) and Botswana (250,000) reported the largest 2025 values, followed by DR Congo and Angola (150,000 each).
Why does the table start in 2024?
No country-level figures appear for earlier years in the compiled series; every country's earliest value is 2024 except Zimbabwe (2025). The 2025 figures are estimates.
Which holder is new in 2025?
Zimbabwe at 56,000 thousand carats — every other value dates from 2024.
