Gold Production by Country
Gold production by country measures how much gold each country produces, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production, in line with the underlying sources. The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles them from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, and the BGS World Mineral Statistics. The table below lists 104 countries that record gold production in the period. 2024 data are available for 17 major producers, which produced a combined 2,470 tonnes in 2024, while the remaining countries report 2023 data, the latest year available for them.
China produced the most gold in 2024 with 380 tonnes. Russia ranked second with 310, followed by Australia (290), Canada (200), and the United States (160). Ghana (130), Kazakhstan (130), Mexico (130), Uzbekistan (120), and Indonesia (100) complete the top ten. Among the 17 countries with available 2024 data, China accounted for about 15 percent of their combined production, and the top five countries together for about 54 percent. Only China and Russia produced more than 300 tonnes in 2024, while 9 countries produced more than 100 tonnes. In Asia, China (380 tonnes) leads, ahead of Kazakhstan (130), Uzbekistan (120), and Indonesia (100). In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia (12.7) is the largest producer. In Africa, Ghana (130 tonnes) was the largest producer, followed by South Africa (100). Guinea reported 74 tonnes in 2023, followed by Mali (70), Burkina Faso (60), and Tanzania (60). In the Americas, Canada (200 tonnes) leads, ahead of the United States (160), Mexico (130), Peru (100), Brazil (70), and Colombia (60). Argentina (39.05) and Chile (35.79) report 2023 data. In Europe, Russia is the dominant producer with 310 tonnes. Bulgaria (9.2), Finland (8.8), and Sweden (7.4) follow with 2023 data. In Oceania, Australia (290 tonnes) leads, while Papua New Guinea (41) reports 2023 data. Kazakhstan recorded the largest increase between 2020 and 2024, rising from 63 to 130 tonnes (up 67). Canada added 30 tonnes, from 170 to 200, and Mexico added 28, from 102 to 130. Uzbekistan added 19 tonnes, from 101 to 120, while Bolivia rose from 23.2 to 46.6 (up 23.4). Sudan recorded the largest decline, falling from 90 tonnes in 2020 to 30 tonnes in 2023 (down 60). Australia fell from 328 to 290 (down 38), the United States from 193 to 160 (down 33), and Argentina from 59 to 39.05 (down 20). The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles national gold production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. Values refer to mine production of gold, in tonnes, based on mined rather than refined production, and 2024 figures are preliminary estimates from the USGS. The main comparison uses 2024 data for the 17 countries with available 2024 figures, while the remaining countries use their latest available data, mostly from 2023. Countries with no gold production in any year of the period are excluded from the table. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported. According to Our World in Data, the sum of all countries may exceed the World total in certain years, by up to 10 percent, due to discrepancies between the underlying data sources.Countries With the Largest Gold Production in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country produces the most gold?
China produced the most gold in 2024 with 380 tonnes, followed by Russia (310) and Australia (290).
How many countries are included in the dataset?
The table lists 104 countries that record gold mine production, based on Our World in Data figures compiled from USGS and BGS sources.
What does this indicator measure?
It measures gold mine production in tonnes, based on mined rather than refined production, as in the underlying sources.
Which country produces the least gold?
Among the countries with 2024 data, Tanzania recorded the smallest output at 60 tonnes. Across the full dataset, Taiwan had the smallest latest reported figure, at 0.003 tonnes in 2023.
Why do some countries show earlier figures?
2024 figures are available for 17 major producers in the source data; the remaining countries report 2023 data, the latest year available for them.
