Graphite Production by Country
Graphite production by country measures how much graphite each country produces, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production, in line with the underlying sources. The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles them from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities. The table below lists 19 countries that record graphite production in the period. 2024 data are available for 18 major producers, which produced a combined 1,630,670 tonnes in 2024, while Uzbekistan's latest figure is from 2021.
China produced the most graphite in 2024 with 1,270,000 tonnes. Madagascar ranked second with 89,000, followed by Mozambique (75,000), Brazil (68,000), and India (27,800). Tanzania (25,000), Canada (20,000), Russia (20,000), South Korea (9,600), and North Korea (8,100) complete the top ten. Among the 18 countries with available 2024 data, China accounted for about 78 percent of their combined production, and the top five countries together for about 94 percent. Only China produced more than 100,000 tonnes in 2024. In Asia, China (1,270,000 tonnes) leads by a wide margin, ahead of India (27,800). South Korea (9,600) and North Korea (8,100) follow, ahead of Sri Lanka (3,300) and Türkiye (3,100). Vietnam (2,000) reports 2024 data, while Uzbekistan (110) reports 2021 data, its latest year. In Africa, Madagascar (89,000 tonnes) leads, ahead of Mozambique (75,000) and Tanzania (25,000). In the Americas, Brazil (68,000 tonnes) is the largest producer, ahead of Canada (20,000) and Mexico (900). The United States reported no production for 2020–2022, and no later figures. In Europe, Russia (20,000 tonnes) leads, ahead of Norway (7,000), Ukraine (1,200), Austria (500), and Germany (170). China recorded the largest increase between 2020 and 2024, rising from 762,000 to 1,270,000 tonnes (up 508,000). Madagascar added 68,100, from 20,900 to 89,000, and Mozambique added 47,000, from 28,000 to 75,000. Tanzania went from no production to 25,000 tonnes, while Canada rose from 8,000 to 20,000 (up 12,000). Ukraine recorded the largest decline, falling from 16,000 to 1,200 tonnes (down 14,800). Russia fell from 25,000 to 20,000 (down 5,000), Norway from 12,000 to 7,000 (down 5,000), and Vietnam from 5,000 to 2,000 (down 3,000). Mexico declined from 3,300 to 900 (down 2,400). The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles national graphite production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, with major processing by Our World in Data. Values refer to mine production of graphite, in tonnes, based on mined rather than refined production, and 2024 figures are preliminary estimates from the USGS. The main comparison uses 2024 data for the 18 countries with available 2024 figures, while Uzbekistan uses its latest available data, from 2021. Countries with no graphite production in any year of the period are excluded from the table. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported. According to Our World in Data, the sum of all countries may exceed the World total in certain years, by up to 10 percent, due to discrepancies between the underlying data sources.Countries With the Largest Graphite Production in 2024
