Green Garlic Consumption by Country

China accounted for nearly two-thirds of the reported green garlic food supply in 2023, far ahead of India and Bangladesh. It also ranked first on a per-person basis, while Vietnam recorded one of the sharpest annual increases. Spain moved in the opposite direction, with its reported supply falling by nearly three-quarters. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.

Green Garlic Supply: Key Findings. China ranked first in green garlic food supply in 2023, with 17,541,807 tonnes, or 66.2 percent of the listed total. India ranked second at 2,949,738 tonnes, followed by Bangladesh at 666,324 tonnes. China also had the highest per-person supply, at 33.78 grams per person per day. Across the 176 countries with comparable data, total supply increased by 171,566 tonnes from 2022 to 2023, with Vietnam contributing 148,284 tonnes of that gain. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

China Holds Two-Thirds

China led, 5.95 times India. Bangladesh sat third at 666,324 tonnes, ahead of Indonesia at 603,327 and Egypt at 412,265. The top three held 79.8 percent of the 26,502,359-tonne total, and the top five 83.7 percent. Brazil, South Korea, the United States, Vietnam and Uzbekistan closed the top ten between 205,677 and 289,400 tonnes. Of 177 countries in the file, 176 carried a 2023 value.

Vietnam Triples, Spain Falls

Across the 176 countries with reported values in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 0.7 percent, from 26,330,793 tonnes, a gain of 171,566. Vietnam added 148,284 tonnes, nearly tripling from 84,778, most of the net rise. Bangladesh added 109,140 tonnes, up 19.6 percent. China shed 74,438 tonnes. Spain shed 33,862 tonnes, down 74.8 percent from 45,250. India added 33,636 tonnes back. Egypt shed 31,307 tonnes, while the United States shed 29,819 and South Korea added 28,045 tonnes.

India and Vietnam Drive Five Years

Among the 176 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, supply grew 3.0 percent, from 25,720,996 tonnes, a gain of 781,363. India added 289,568 tonnes, up 10.9 percent. Vietnam added 215,696 tonnes from 17,366. China shed 202,119 tonnes. Bangladesh added 155,483 tonnes, up 30.4 percent. Egypt added 110,681 tonnes, up 36.7 percent. Malaysia added 62,723 tonnes, up 60.6 percent. Cuba reported 13,836 tonnes in 2019 with no later values.

China Leads Per Person Too

China also led the per-person ranking, at 33.78 grams per person per day, followed by Kyrgyzstan at 27.94 grams. Uzbekistan ranked third at 15.81 grams, ahead of Albania at 15.08 and South Korea at 14.74. Ukraine followed at 13.64 grams and Malaysia at 12.96 grams, with Algeria at 11.94 and Oman at 11.31. The gap between China and India is striking: despite India's second-place total supply, its per-person figure was just 5.62 grams per day.

Methodology

Green garlic supply is measured using FAO FAOSTAT element 5141 for tonnes and element 665 for grams per person per day, covering 2019-2023. Year-to-year and five-year changes include only countries with reported values in both comparison years. A reported zero is distinct from a blank value, and percentage changes are not calculated from a zero baseline. The dataset contains 177 country entries after World, regional and aggregate rows are excluded; 176 have a reported value for 2023.
