Groundnuts From One Year to the Next

Across the 82 countries with values in both 2022 and 2023, supply slipped 1.4 percent from 8,033,977 tonnes, a loss of 109,647 tonnes, with no country entering or leaving. China's 201,092-tonne rise was outweighed by falls in Tanzania and Uganda. India added 14,364 tonnes (+3.4 percent) and Germany shed 12,805 (-47.4 percent).

The Longer Arc of Groundnuts

Among the 79 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, the total climbed 6.0 percent from 7,479,164 tonnes, a gain of 445,166 tonnes. China's 504,672-tonne rise accounted for 113.4 percent of that net gain. Tanzania's 49,042-tonne fall (-13.2 percent) and Afghanistan's 24,572 (-85.6 percent) offset part of it, while India added 41,579 (+10.6 percent) and Senegal 18,009.

The Per-Person Side of Groundnuts

Senegal's 15.76 grams a day led the per-person table, ahead of Vanuatu at 13.29 and Tanzania at 13.27. China led by a huge margin on volume, yet ranked only fourth per person at 13.04 grams a day, with Uganda at 5.64 behind, followed by Trinidad and Tobago (2.14) and Tajikistan (2.02). Senegal and Tanzania are the only countries in both the per-person top three and the volume top five, while Uganda ranked fifth on both tables.

What Counts as Groundnuts Here

This page follows the SUA item labelled Groundnuts, excluding shelled, and counts only its rows; the shelled form is a separate item, while World, regional and aggregate rows are not in the table. The annual listed supply total sums the countries with a 2023 value. Food here means supply available for people to eat in the reference year, not amounts eaten.

Groundnuts: The Swings That Matter

Tanzania's supply swung from 520,843 tonnes in 2022 to 322,625 in 2023, while Uganda moved from 209,042 to 100,098. Afghanistan's five-year path ran from 28,721 tonnes to 4,149. Djibouti entered from a zero base at 1,509 tonnes.

Methodology

For this item, tonnage follows element 5141 and daily grams follow element 665, both across 2019 to 2023. Rates are measured from the earlier year; none is given from a zero base. Only countries present in both compared years enter a change. A reported zero is not a blank, and blanks never stand in for zeros. The file holds 85 countries after removing World, regional and aggregate rows; 82 of them carry 2023 values. The numbers describe food available for human consumption.
