Hazelnuts Consumption by Country
Hazelnut food supply in 2023 came to 44,733 tonnes, and Iran held 29.0 percent of it at 12,988 tonnes. Serbia followed, ahead of Poland. Per person the order changed: Serbia led, while Iran's 0.39 put it fourth. Canada's supply fell from 4,333 tonnes in 2019 to 111.76 in 2023.
Hazelnuts Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Which country consumes the most hazelnuts? Iran led with 12,988 tonnes in 2023, or 29.0% of the 44,733 tonnes reported by 117 countries. Serbia came second at 7,697 tonnes and Poland third at 5,282, yet Serbia headed the per-person table at 3.11 grams a day. The measure is food available for human consumption, not actual intake.
Fourth place went to Kyrgyzstan at 3,645 tonnes, then Croatia at 1,875, Germany at 1,809, Thailand at 1,667 and Belarus at 1,192. The leading three accounted for 58.0 percent of all supply, and Iran's total was 1.69 times Serbia's. On the per-person scale Kyrgyzstan (1.41) and Croatia (1.32) came next after Serbia. The 115 countries present in both 2022 and 2023 saw their supply ease from 47,652 tonnes, a 6.1 percent decrease worth 2,919 tonnes. Canada alone was responsible for 55.0 percent of that drop, falling 1,606 tonnes; Thailand gave up 1,174 tonnes, Serbia 577 and Russia 440. Offsetting the slide, Ukraine climbed 602 tonnes (438.5 percent up), Poland 523 and Vietnam 526. Of the 108 countries with data in both 2019 and 2023, the group's supply grew by 5,988 tonnes, or 15.5 percent, reaching 44,721 from 38,733. Canada's 4,221-tonne retreat offset 70.5 percent of that advance; Serbia drove 50.3 percent and Poland 46.9 percent. Thailand gained 1,022 tonnes and Germany 891. Seven countries exited and nine arrived, Bhutan the largest with 11.44 tonnes. Serbia's 3.11 grams a day stood well above the field, followed by Kyrgyzstan at 1.41 and Croatia at 1.32. Iran, largest by tonnage, placed only fourth at 0.39 grams, with Poland at 0.37 and Belarus at 0.36 close behind. Hazelnuts in shell stand as one FAO item, tracked separately from shelled nuts and from other tree crops. Each value is a reference-year supply figure, and the grams-per-person column restates that same supply for each resident. Canada's supply shrank from 4,844 tonnes in 2021 to 111.76 in 2023, a swing unmatched in the table. At the other end, Vietnam's five-year gain of 24,035 percent began from just 2.29 tonnes. Iran showed the widest gap between the two measures, first by volume and only fourth per person. Tonnes here are FAO's food supply quantity for hazelnuts in shell, drawn from element 5141; the grams per person per day come from element 665, and both span 2019 to 2023. Change figures divide by the earlier year, and a base of zero leaves no percentage to report. Only countries holding a value in both years enter a comparison, so entrants and leavers do not distort a change. A cell reading zero is a reported zero; a blank cell is a missing report, and the two are never treated alike. What the numbers describe is food available for human consumption, with no allowance for household waste or losses, so they sit above the amount people eat. Reporters are 127 in all, with World, regions and the China aggregate removed and China kept as a single row; 117 carry a 2023 value and feed the 2023 yearly total. Frequently Asked Questions
Which country has the highest hazelnut supply per person?
Serbia, at 3.11 grams per person per day in 2023, led Kyrgyzstan at 1.41 and Croatia at 1.32, well clear of Iran's 0.39 grams a day.
How much hazelnut supply was available in 2023?
The 117 countries reporting a 2023 value held 44,733 tonnes in 2023, down 6.1 percent from 47,652 tonnes in 2022, a fall of 2,919 tonnes.
How much did Canada's hazelnut supply change?
Canada fell from 4,333 tonnes in 2019 to 111.76 in 2023, a loss of 4,221 tonnes or 97.4 percent, the table's largest five-year movement.
Is this what people actually eat?
No. The figures measure food available for human consumption, the supply a country holds, not the amount people actually eat, so rankings reflect supply rather than diet.
How did Poland's hazelnut supply change?
Poland rose from 2,471 tonnes in 2019 to 5,282 in 2023, a gain of 113.8 percent and the third-largest volume in the table, behind Iran and Serbia.
