Hazelnuts, Shelled Consumption by Country
Türkiye had 138,042 tonnes of shelled hazelnut food supply in 2023, 31.1 percent of the total and 2.21 times Germany. Germany came second and Italy third. The per-person picture is narrower here: Türkiye still led at 4.33 grams a day, but Azerbaijan and Georgia pressed close behind, and the biggest volumes and per-person figures largely overlapped.
Hazelnuts in Brief
Türkiye had the largest shelled hazelnut food supply in 2023 at 138,042 tonnes, or 31.1 percent of the 443,858-tonne total. Germany ranked second at 62,395 tonnes. Türkiye also led per person, at 4.33 grams per person per day. These figures measure food available for human consumption rather than the amount actually eaten.
France took fourth place at 29,450 tonnes and China fifth at 18,882, with Canada sixth (17,383), Russia seventh (17,259), Azerbaijan eighth (12,085), the United States ninth (10,028) and Switzerland tenth (9,467). The leading three held 57.0 percent of supply. The volume top ten and the per-person top ten share seven countries, a broader overlap than most nut tables show. Across the 157 countries with values in both 2022 and 2023, supply dipped 1.1 percent, from 448,727 tonnes to 443,858, a loss of 4,869 tonnes. Italy's 21,431-tonne fall far exceeded the net decline, so gains elsewhere offset it; Türkiye added 15,065 tonnes and Canada 4,648. Chile shed 7,529 tonnes and China 4,491, while Georgia rose 4,046. Of the 150 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, the total was almost flat, slipping 0.4 percent from 445,819 tonnes to 443,853, a loss of just 1,966 tonnes. Türkiye's 14,703-tonne decline and Italy's 12,201 both ran against the small net change, while Canada added 8,802 tonnes and Azerbaijan 8,635. Seven countries entered and six left; the newcomers carried 4.99 tonnes in 2023 against 32.23 tonnes for the leavers. Türkiye headed the per-person column at 4.33 grams a day, ahead of Azerbaijan at 3.21 and Georgia at 2.98. Switzerland (2.92) and Italy (2.42) followed. Azerbaijan and Georgia stand out as the only two countries in the per-person top three whose volumes sit outside the volume top five. Shelled hazelnuts form one FAO line, always kept apart from hazelnuts in shell and from the wider nut group. A country's figure shows the food it had available for people in the reference year, rather than a farm output or a consignment, and the grams-per-person number divides that same supply by the number of residents. Georgia's swing was the sharpest in the table, from 101.20 tonnes in 2022 to 4,147 in 2023. Italy reversed direction twice, climbing from 49,634 tonnes in 2021 to 74,052 in 2022 before falling back to 52,621. Chile's own pattern was erratic, at 92.62 tonnes in 2021 and 13,205 in 2022 before easing to 5,676. Türkiye stayed first throughout, though below its 2019 level of 152,745 tonnes. The volume column carries FAO's food supply quantity for shelled hazelnuts, element 5141, for the years 2019 to 2023; the grams-per-person column carries element 665 over the same span. Each percentage is taken against the first year of the pair, and it is omitted whenever that figure is zero. A comparison across two years counts only countries that report in both. A zero entry means FAO recorded zero, a blank means nothing was reported, and the two are never merged. The values describe food available for human consumption, not the quantity people actually ate. Of 164 countries, world, regional and China aggregate rows are left out and China is a single row; 157 hold a 2023 value. Compiled by StatsGeo from FAO FAOSTAT.What Changed for Shelled Hazelnuts

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country has the largest shelled hazelnut supply?
Türkiye, at 31.1 percent of the total, ahead of Germany at 62,395 tonnes and Italy at 52,621 tonnes, with France fourth at 29,450.
How much shelled hazelnut supply was available in 2023?
The 157 countries reporting a 2023 value held 443,858 tonnes, down 1.1 percent from 448,727 tonnes in 2022, a fall of 4,869 tonnes.
How much did Italy's shelled hazelnut supply change in 2023?
Italy fell from 74,052 tonnes in 2022 to 52,621 in 2023, a loss of 21,431 tonnes or 28.9 percent, the steepest single-year drop in the table.
Is this what people actually eat?
No. The figures measure food available for human consumption, not what people actually eat, so the rankings reflect food supply rather than the amount consumed in a diet.
Why does Türkiye lead both by volume and per person?
Its 138,042 tonnes give the table's highest per-person figure, because Türkiye's supply is both large and spread across a modest population.
