Hydrogenated Oils and Fats Consumption by Country
Canada recorded the largest hydrogenated oils and fats food supply in 2023, at 147,859 tonnes, or about 21.8 percent of the listed total. Algeria ranked second at 89,415 tonnes, followed by Vietnam at 40,452 tonnes and Egypt at 30,991 tonnes. Canada also led per person at 10.31 grams a day, ahead of Sweden at 7.92 grams. The listed 2023 total was 678,297 tonnes, and 77 of the 80 country rows reported a value for that year, 73 of them above zero. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Which Countries Lead Hydrogenated Oils and Fats Food Supply?
In 2023, Canada recorded the highest reported quantity of hydrogenated oils and fats at 147,859 tonnes. Algeria ranked second at 89,415 tonnes, followed by Vietnam at 40,452 tonnes. Canada also ranked first per person at 10.31 grams a day. The country with the highest total quantity also leads on a per-capita basis here, so the two measures agree in this table, although they should still be compared separately. These figures describe reported food supply, not the amount people actually consumed.
The three leading countries together accounted for about 40.9 percent of the listed 2023 total, with Canada alone supplying roughly 21.8 percent. Afghanistan lost 24,696 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 47.7 percent to 27,025 tonnes. Australia lost 15,846 tonnes, down 54.3 percent, and South Africa shed 15,278 tonnes, down 82.7 percent, to 3,202 tonnes. Algeria added 14,196 tonnes, up 18.9 percent, Yemen added 14,258 tonnes, up 1,146.7 percent, and Vietnam added 18,772 tonnes, up 86.6 percent. The 74 countries with a value in both years rose from 630,813 tonnes to 678,248 tonnes, up 47,435 tonnes, or 7.5 percent, with the Marshall Islands, Myanmar and Saint Lucia joining and none leaving. Between 2019 and 2023, the 70 countries with a value in both years rose from 590,932 tonnes to 677,688 tonnes, up 86,756 tonnes, or 14.7 percent. Sweden added the most, at 30,491 tonnes from a reported 2019 zero, so no percentage is calculated for that country. Vietnam added 25,180 tonnes, up 164.9 percent, and Algeria added 14,488 tonnes, up 19.3 percent. Afghanistan recorded the largest decline, losing 23,217 tonnes, down 46.2 percent, while Australia shed 20,985 tonnes, down 61.2 percent, and DR Congo gave up 12,953 tonnes, down 72.2 percent. Seven countries entered the comparison with 2023 values and no 2019 value, while Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Micronesia left it. Canada recorded 10.31 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Sweden at 7.92 grams in second and El Salvador at 6.36 grams in third. Uruguay sat fourth at 6.34 grams, with Costa Rica at 5.87 grams. Hydrogenated oils and fats available for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only, and the listed total is not a world figure that includes regional aggregates. Total tonnage shows the scale of reported food supply, while grams per person per day adjust the figures for population size. Four countries reported zero tonnes in 2023: Cape Verde after 10.36 tonnes in 2022, Montenegro after 55.3 tonnes, Oman, and Saudi Arabia after 4,757 tonnes. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so the three rows without a 2023 value cannot be read as zero supply. The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for hydrogenated oils and fats, over 2019-2023. Of the 80 country rows, 77 reported a value in 2023 and 73 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives 74 countries for 2022-2023 and 70 for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the hydrogenated oils and fats category measure?
The category refers to hydrogenated oils and fats recorded in the FAO dataset, and the precise interpretation depends on the product classification and the selected food-supply indicator.
Why are total tonnage and per-capita figures different?
Total tonnage reports the overall quantity for a country, while a per-capita measure adjusts that quantity for population, so the two can rank countries differently and must use consistent units.
Can percentage growth be calculated from zero?
No. When the starting value is zero the percentage change is undefined, although the absolute change can still be reported, as with the rise from a reported 2019 zero described above.
Does food supply mean that people ate this quantity?
No. Food supply describes availability under the dataset's methodology, not actual intake, so it should not be read as a direct measure of what individuals consumed.
Why do country totals differ between comparisons?
A comparison may include only countries with reported values in both endpoint years, whereas an annual total may include every country with a value in that year, so coverage differs.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
