Liquid Margarine Consumption by Country

Myanmar ranked first in reported liquid margarine food supply in 2023, with 6,959 tonnes, or about 34.8 percent of the listed country total. Kuwait followed with 3,719 tonnes, and Taiwan ranked third with 3,078 tonnes. Saint Kitts and Nevis recorded the highest daily per-capita supply at 7.73 grams. The listed 2023 total was 20,001 tonnes, and 44 of the 51 country rows reported a value for that year, 29 of them above zero. The dataset measures food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.

Liquid Margarine Consumption

South Korea placed fourth by volume at 1,192 tonnes, and the three leading countries together accounted for about 68.8 percent of the listed 2023 total, with Myanmar alone holding roughly 34.8 percent.

  • Saudi Arabia reported zero after a four-digit 2022 level.
  • Myanmar added 1,148 tonnes, up 19.8 percent.
  • Kuwait added 581 tonnes, up 18.5 percent.
  • Trinidad and Tobago moved from zero to 670.16 tonnes.

Saudi Arabia Records the Largest Annual Decline

Saudi Arabia lost 1,511 tonnes between 2022 and 2023 and reported zero for 2023. Senegal fell from 352.61 tonnes to zero, and Haiti from 312.70 tonnes to zero. Kuwait added 581 tonnes, up 18.5 percent, Trinidad and Tobago added 670.16 tonnes from a reported zero, and Myanmar added 1,148 tonnes, up 19.8 percent. The 41 countries with reported values in both years increased their combined supply from 17,854 tonnes in 2022 to 18,013 tonnes in 2023, a rise of 159 tonnes, or 0.9 percent. Three additional countries reported values in 2023, while none dropped out of the reporting set.

The United States Records the Largest Five-Year Decline

Between 2019 and 2023, the countries with reported values in both years fell from 23,078 tonnes to 9,965 tonnes, down 13,113 tonnes, or 56.8 percent. This result covers only that shared set and not the whole table. The United States fell from 12,500 tonnes in 2019 to a reported zero in 2023. Kuwait lost 971 tonnes, down 20.7 percent, and Ethiopia fell from 391.78 tonnes to zero. Saint Lucia added 300.04 tonnes, up 250.0 percent, Lithuania added 456.20 tonnes from 108.11 tonnes, and South Africa added 525.01 tonnes, up 198.7 percent. Fifteen countries entered the comparison with 2023 values and no 2019 value, while the Bahamas, Cuba and Panama left it.

Saint Kitts and Nevis Leads Liquid Margarine Supply per Person

Saint Kitts and Nevis recorded 7.73 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Saint Lucia at 6.42 grams in second and Kuwait at 2.11 grams in third. Grenada sat fourth at 1.77 grams.

What the Liquid Margarine Data Measures

The dataset reports liquid margarine available for human consumption in tonnes and grams per capita per day. Total tonnage describes the reported national supply, while the per-capita measure expresses that supply relative to population. Neither figure directly measures actual individual consumption.

Saudi Arabia reported 1,511 tonnes in 2022 and zero in 2023, while the United States reported 12,500 tonnes in 2019 and zero in 2023. These large changes merit verification against the original FAOSTAT records before being interpreted as changes in actual food consumption. Senegal, Haiti, Bangladesh, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau and Samoa also recorded zero values in 2023 after reporting positive quantities in earlier years.

Methodology

The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for liquid margarine over 2019-2023. Of the 51 country rows, 44 reported a value in 2023 and 29 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with reported values at both endpoints, which gives 41 countries for 2022-2023 and the smaller shared set described above for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from the relevant set. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country ranks second in liquid margarine supply per person?

Saint Lucia ranked second in 2023 at 6.42 grams per person per day, behind Saint Kitts and Nevis at 7.73 grams in the reported figures.

How concentrated is liquid margarine supply?

Myanmar accounted for 34.8 percent of the listed 2023 tonnage, while Myanmar, Kuwait and Taiwan together accounted for 68.8 percent of it that year overall.

Why did Saudi Arabia's reported supply fall to zero?

FAOSTAT lists 1,511 tonnes in 2022 and zero in 2023, and the figures alone do not establish why the reported quantity changed before any conclusion is drawn.

Do these figures show how much people actually ate?

No. They represent food available for human consumption, not measured individual intake, so they describe availability rather than what each person ate in each country.

Which country recorded the largest five-year decline?

The United States fell from 12,500 tonnes in 2019 to a reported zero in 2023, and this comparison covers reported supply rather than confirmed actual consumption.
