Margarine and Shortening Supply by Country: Key Findings. The United States had the largest listed margarine and shortening food supply in 2023, at 4,120,492 tonnes, accounting for 34.0 percent of the reported total. Pakistan ranked second with 854,250 tonnes, followed by Brazil with 766,352 tonnes. Together, these three countries accounted for 47.4 percent of the listed supply. Hungary ranked first in food supply per person, at 37.01 grams per person per day, ahead of Sweden at 35.29 grams. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

Türkiye placed fourth at 653,143 tonnes, with Mexico fifth at 546,126 and India sixth at 444,693. Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom and Kenya closed the top ten between 279,696 and 422,559 tonnes. The United States had the highest listed food supply, while Hungary had the highest per-capita food supply.

Brazil Records the Largest Annual Decline

Brazil lost 96,383 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 11.2 percent to 766,352 tonnes. Indonesia lost 82,148 tonnes, down 35.1 percent. Kenya shed 59,941 tonnes, down 17.6 percent. Russia added 23,062 tonnes, up 5.8 percent. Colombia added 32,785 tonnes, up 179.3 percent. The United States added 39,054 tonnes, up 1.0 percent. The 174 countries with reported values in both years eased from 12,354,078 tonnes to 12,108,053 tonnes, down 246,024 tonnes, or 2.0 percent, with no departures and no arrivals.

India's Margarine and Shortening Supply Falls Over Five Years

Between 2019 and 2023, the 173 countries with reported values in both years eased from 12,604,291 tonnes to 12,108,040 tonnes, down 496,251 tonnes, or 3.9 percent. India lost 417,438 tonnes, down 48.4 percent. Ukraine shed 148,779 tonnes, down 60.6 percent. Poland gave up 111,967 tonnes, down 45.8 percent. Venezuela added 58,873 tonnes, up 61.2 percent. Kenya added 111,316 tonnes, up 66.1 percent. The United States added 161,492 tonnes, up 4.1 percent. Cuba reported 383.37 tonnes in 2019 with no later values, while Micronesia first reported 13.44 tonnes in 2023.

Hungary Leads per Person

Hungary's 37.01 grams a day beat Sweden's 35.29 in second and the United States' 32.87 in third. Norway sat fourth at 28.65 grams. Total tonnage and per-person figures describe different measures: the first reflects overall volume, the second adjusts for population.

What the Margarine and Shortening Data Covers

The dataset uses FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts data for margarine and shortening from 2019 through 2023. It reports food supply for human consumption in tonnes and grams per person per day. Annual totals include countries with reported values for that year, while year-to-year changes compare only countries with values in both years. Reported zeros are retained; blank entries are treated as missing data, not as zero. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the baseline and are not calculated when that baseline is zero.

Egypt reported zero in 2022 and 17,703 tonnes in 2023, while Morocco reported zero in 2022 and 3,371 tonnes in 2023. Reported zeros are retained as supplied by FAO. Whether they reflect real changes in availability or changes in reporting cannot be determined from this table alone.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report margarine and shortening food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing values. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.
