Magnesium compounds production by country measures how much magnesium compounds each country produces, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to production of magnesium compounds from magnesite and other magnesium-bearing materials, as reported by the source, and are not the same as magnesium metal production. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for the earlier years (2020-2024), built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table below lists 14 countries with recorded production during the period. Individual 2025 estimates are available for 12 countries, which produced a combined 20,465,000 tonnes in 2025; together with the "Other countries" value of 340,000 tonnes, this totals 20,805,000 tonnes, below the reported World total of 21,000,000 tonnes in the source. Saudi Arabia keeps its 2022 value (340,000 tonnes), and the United States is listed in the source as withheld (W).

Countries With the Largest Magnesium Compounds Production in 2025

China produced the most magnesium compounds in 2025 with 12,700,000 tonnes. Brazil ranked second with 1,800,000, followed by Russia (1,700,000), Türkiye (1,600,000), Austria (650,000), and Spain (640,000). Australia (400,000), Slovakia (330,000), Canada (230,000), and Iran (200,000) complete the top ten.

China alone accounted for about 60 percent of the World total in 2025, and China and Brazil together for about 69 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 77 percent. China's output was about 7 times that of Brazil. Four countries produced at least 1 million tonnes in 2025.

Magnesium Compounds Production Around the World

In Asia, China (12,700,000) leads by a wide margin, ahead of India (85,000). In South America, Brazil (1,800,000) is the largest producer.

In Europe, Russia (1,700,000) leads, ahead of Türkiye (1,600,000), Austria (650,000), Spain (640,000), Slovakia (330,000), and Greece (130,000). In Oceania, Australia (400,000) is the only listed producer. In the Middle East, Iran (200,000) is the largest listed producer; Saudi Arabia (340,000, 2022) retains its older value. In North America, Canada (230,000) is the only listed producer; the United States is listed in the source as withheld (W).

Largest Changes in Magnesium Compounds Production, 2024-2025

Russia recorded the largest increase, rising from 1,690,000 tonnes in 2024 to 1,700,000 in 2025 (up 10,000, about 0.6 percent). All other listed countries either fell or held their levels.

China recorded the largest decline, falling from 12,900,000 to 12,700,000 tonnes (down 200,000, about 1.6 percent). Brazil fell from 1,850,000 to 1,800,000 (down 50,000, about 2.7 percent), India from 117,000 to 85,000 (down 32,000, about 27 percent), Spain by 15,000, Austria by 14,000, Australia by 10,000, and Slovakia and Greece by 4,000 each. Türkiye (1,600,000) and Iran (200,000) held their levels.

The World total fell from 21,100,000 to 21,000,000 tonnes (down 100,000, about 0.5 percent); the World total is reported separately from the country figures in the source.

The 2024 figures in this release are revised from earlier values, most notably Russia (revised down from 2,500,000 to 1,690,000 tonnes), Greece (down from 390,000 to 134,000), Türkiye (up from 1,300,000 to 1,600,000), Canada (up from 150,000 to 230,000), and India (down from 160,000 to 117,000).

Methodology

The earlier figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national magnesium compounds production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The earlier series covers 2020-2024. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 where available; Saudi Arabia keeps its earlier Our World in Data value (340,000 tonnes from 2022). Values refer to production of magnesium compounds from magnesite and other magnesium-bearing materials, in tonnes, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. The source reports production in thousand-ton units for 2024-2025; values here are expressed in tonnes. The source lists the United States as withheld (W) to avoid disclosing company proprietary data, so no U.S. value is included in the table. The sum of individually reported country estimates does not equal the reported World total because the source applies rounding and other adjustments at the country and World levels. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
