Maize Flour Consumption by Country

Mexico holds 13,697,655 tonnes of listed maize flour supply in 2023 — 12.4 percent of a 110,341,231-tonne total, a diffuse lead with the top three at only 26.5 percent. Malawi tops per person at 316.29 grams a day from 2,436,447 tonnes. The latest year rose 3.9 percent with all eight largest movers gaining, led by India's 1,962,594 tonnes. Five years added 1.4 percent, as Indonesia's 4,500,093-tonne fall — nearly three times the net increase — met gains in Tanzania, Uganda, Egypt and China.

Mexico sits top at 13,697,655 tonnes, 1.70 times China at 8,037,530, with India third at 7,504,150 and Nigeria fourth at 6,282,149. Per person Malawi doubles most of the field at 316.29 grams a day, ahead of Mexico at 289.25 and Zambia at 242.71.

India rebounded from 5,541,556 to 7,504,150 tonnes in the latest year for the largest annual gain. Indonesia's collapse from 4,659,284 tonnes in 2019 to 154,573 in 2022 shapes the five-year net, against growth carried by Tanzania, Uganda, Egypt and China.

Mexico at 12.4 Percent; Malawi First Per Person

The 2023 table opens with Mexico at 13,697,655 tonnes, China second at 8,037,530 and India third at 7,504,150. Nigeria and Ethiopia follow at 6,282,149 and 6,270,453 tonnes.

The top three reporters hold 26.5 percent of the listed total, the top five 37.9 percent and the top ten 57.4 percent. Per person, Malawi's 316.29 grams a day from 2,436,447 tonnes tops Mexico at 289.25 grams. Malawi ranks 12th by total and first per person.

Malawi's per-person figure moved from 354.62 grams a day in 2019 to 316.29 in 2023 (down 10.8 percent) while its total stayed almost flat, from 2,462,604 to 2,436,447 tonnes (down 1.1 percent). Tanzania moved from 151.21 to 204.92 grams the other way, while Mexico read 286.47 and 289.25. Over a year, Malawi's 316.29 grams a day works out to about 115 kilograms per person.

Up 3.9 Percent in 2023 on Eight Gainers

Across the 170 reporters with values in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply moved from 106,160,130 tonnes to 110,341,231 tonnes, up 4,181,101 tonnes or 3.9 percent. The two years share the same 170 reporters, with none entering or leaving. India added 1,962,594 tonnes (up 35.4 percent), Tanzania 504,633 (up 11.3 percent), Mexico 487,860 (up 3.7 percent), China 379,223 (up 5.0 percent), Kenya 289,973 (up 10.6 percent), Pakistan 199,892 (up 16.4 percent), Egypt 185,023 (up 3.7 percent) and Ethiopia 167,903 (up 2.8 percent).

The eight largest movers all gained, led by India's rebound. The biggest declines were Malaysia (down 140,108 tonnes), Uganda (down 135,557) and Saudi Arabia (down 131,577), all small against India's rebound of 1,962,594.

Five Years Added 1.4 Percent Against Indonesia's Fall

For the 168 reporters with values in both 2019 and 2023, listed supply rose from 108,824,849 tonnes to 110,341,128 tonnes, up 1,516,279 tonnes or 1.4 percent. The 2019 universe holds 169 reporters with values against 170 in 2023; Cuba, with 12,359 tonnes in 2019, has no 2023 value, while the Marshall Islands and Tunisia entered with a combined 103 tonnes. Tanzania added 1,716,781 tonnes (up 52.6 percent), Uganda 1,457,466 (up 80.5 percent), Egypt 974,912 (up 23.5 percent), China 937,530 (up 13.2 percent) and Ethiopia 569,206 (up 10.0 percent).

Indonesia fell 4,500,093 tonnes (down 96.6 percent), South Africa fell 1,109,082 tonnes (down 25.2 percent) and India fell 838,746 tonnes (down 10.1 percent).

Indonesia's fall came in one step, from 4,659,284 tonnes in 2019 to 179,119 in 2020, and its supply has stayed between 154,573 and 179,119 tonnes since. At 4,500,093 tonnes the fall is nearly three times the net increase; Tanzania, Uganda, Egypt, China and Ethiopia together added 5,655,895 tonnes against it.

Totals are FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (element 5141, tonnes); per-capita figures are element 665 in grams per capita per day — both for flour of maize, 2019 through 2023. The elements count supply made available for human consumption over the reference period. A displayed zero means zero and a blank cell means no value was reported, and no percentage is shown where the base-year value is zero.
