Maize Oil Consumption by Country
The United States held 861,867 tonnes of listed maize oil food supply in 2023, 33.7 percent of a 2,559,597-tonne total. The single year fell 2.6 percent as Brazil halved from 193,009 to 96,513 tonnes, while the United States, China and Germany added. Over five years the common total rose 8.6 percent almost entirely on the United States, which supplied 97.2 percent of the net gain. Kuwait leads per person at 22.31 grams per person per day.
The United States leads at 861,867 tonnes, 1.62 times China at 531,718, with Brazil third at 96,513 and South Africa fourth at 78,588. Per capita Kuwait leads at 22.31 grams per person per day from 39,405 tonnes, followed by Libya at 20.64 and Qatar at 14.56 grams. The United States, first by total, records 6.87 grams per person per day. The FAO dataset lists 170 reporters with maize oil values, although only 166 have a reported 2023 quantity. The United States and China together hold 54.5 percent of the listed total, and Kuwait, Libya, Qatar and Oman hold four of the top five places per person. Brazil nearly doubled from 97,707 tonnes in 2019 to 193,009 in 2022 before falling back to 96,513 in 2023, near its starting level. Egypt fell to 5,706 tonnes in 2022 before rebounding to 16,247, while Türkiye fell 86.2 percent and Mexico 66.5 percent over five years. The 2023 table is led by the United States at 861,867 tonnes, with China second at 531,718 and Brazil third at 96,513. South Africa and Venezuela complete the top five at 78,588 and 68,225 tonnes, respectively. The top three reporters accounted for 58.2 percent of the listed total, the top five 64.0 percent and the top ten 74.5 percent. Per capita, Kuwait's 22.31 grams per person per day from 39,405 tonnes leads Libya at 20.64 grams. At 22.31 grams per day, Kuwait's supply works out to about 8.1 kilograms of maize oil per person per year, against about 2.5 kilograms for the United States. Among the 166 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply decreased from 2,627,249 tonnes to 2,559,597 tonnes, a decline of 67,651 tonnes (2.6 percent). The two years share the same 166 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. Brazil fell 96,496 tonnes (down 50.0 percent), Tunisia fell 15,355 tonnes (down 51.0 percent), Argentina fell 10,695 tonnes (down 19.3 percent) and Iran fell 9,881 tonnes (down 86.9 percent). On the gaining side, the United States added 23,281 tonnes (up 2.8 percent), China added 20,962 tonnes (up 4.1 percent), Germany added 17,125 tonnes (up 50.5 percent) and Egypt added 10,541 tonnes (up 184.7 percent). Brazil's fall of 96,496 tonnes is larger than the net decline of 67,651; the four largest gainers, the United States, China, Germany and Egypt, added 71,909 tonnes against it. For the 159 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 2,357,616 tonnes to 2,559,586 tonnes, a gain of 201,970 tonnes (8.6 percent). The 2019 universe includes 163 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 universe includes 166; four reporters with a combined 20 tonnes left the comparison, while seven reporters with a combined 11 tonnes entered. The United States added 196,359 tonnes (up 29.5 percent), Germany added 35,516 tonnes (up 229.1 percent), Venezuela added 26,539 tonnes (up 63.7 percent), China added 19,785 tonnes (up 3.9 percent) and Tanzania added 13,872 tonnes (up 49.6 percent). The United States contributes 97.2 percent of the five-year net increase; Germany added the next-largest share at 35,516 tonnes. On the declining side, Türkiye fell 34,547 tonnes (down 86.2 percent), Mexico fell 26,012 tonnes (down 66.5 percent) and Egypt fell 21,651 tonnes (down 57.1 percent). The United States rose every year, from 665,508 tonnes in 2019 to 717,800, 792,654, 838,586 and 861,867 in 2023, lifting its per-person supply from 5.40 to 6.87 grams per day. Germany also rose each year, from 15,501 to 51,017 tonnes, about 3.3 times its 2019 level. Brazil's path was a hump instead: 97,707 tonnes in 2019, 195,845 in 2021 and 96,513 in 2023. This article covers the FAO item Oil of maize, commonly called corn oil. Other maize products are therefore not included in this specific figure. The per-capita value expresses the reported food supply in population terms, showing how much was available per person per day. Kuwait records the highest value at 22.31 grams. In 2023, FAO data recorded 2,559,597 tonnes of listed maize oil food supply across 166 reporters. The United States had the largest total at 861,867 tonnes, followed by China at 531,718 tonnes and Brazil at 96,513 tonnes. Kuwait had the highest per-capita food supply at 22.31 grams per person per day. These figures represent food available for human consumption rather than a direct measure of how much maize oil people actually consumed. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (Element 5141, tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 665, g/capita/day) for Oil of maize from 2019 through 2023. The food supply quantity measure represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually consumed, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 170 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Table quantities are shown in tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports food supply quantity in tonnes and in grams per capita per day. The listed total of 2,559,597 tonnes is the sum of the 166 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. Maize Oil Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Brazil's maize oil supply really halve in one year?
Yes, in the data: from 193,009 tonnes in 2022 to 96,513 in 2023. Brazil had been at 97,707 tonnes in 2019 and peaked at 195,845 in 2021, so 2023 is a return to the 2019 level. The dataset gives no explanation for the swing.
How fast did Türkiye's and Mexico's maize oil supply decline?
Türkiye fell in steps, from 40,074 tonnes in 2019 to 28,719, 6,375, 11,045 and 5,527 tonnes in 2023. Mexico held near 36,000-39,000 tonnes until 2021, then dropped to 17,561 in 2022 and 13,097 in 2023.
Is maize oil the same as corn oil?
Yes. Corn oil is the common English name for the oil pressed from maize germ, which FAO lists as Oil of maize.
