Manganese Production by Country

Manganese production by country measures how much manganese each country mines, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production in terms of manganese content, in line with the underlying sources. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for the earlier years (2020-2024), built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table below lists 16 countries with recorded production during the period. Individual 2025 estimates are available for 8 countries, which produced a combined 18,840,000 tonnes in 2025; together with the "Other countries" value of 1,300,000 tonnes, this totals 20,140,000 tonnes, slightly above the reported World total of 20,000,000 tonnes in the source. Australia shows a sharp downward revision in its 2024 figure from the earlier series, while the remaining countries carry their latest available values from 2024 or earlier.

Countries With the Largest Manganese Production in 2025

South Africa produced the most manganese in 2025 with 7,600,000 tonnes. Gabon ranked second with 5,000,000, followed by Ghana (2,000,000), Australia (1,600,000), Brazil (800,000), India (790,000), China (700,000), and Ivory Coast (350,000).

South Africa alone accounted for about 38 percent of the World total in 2025, and South Africa and Gabon together for about 63 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 73 percent. South Africa's output was about 1.5 times that of Gabon. Four countries produced at least 1 million tonnes in 2025.

Manganese Production Around the World

In Africa, South Africa (7,600,000) leads, ahead of Gabon (5,000,000), Ghana (2,000,000), and Ivory Coast (350,000). In Oceania, Australia (1,600,000) is the only listed producer.

In Asia, India (790,000) leads, ahead of China (700,000). Malaysia (410,000, 2024), Vietnam (155,000, 2022), Myanmar (207,000, 2022), and Kazakhstan (129,000, 2022) retain their latest available values. In South America, Brazil (800,000) is the only listed producer. In Europe, Ukraine (323,000, 2022) and Georgia (166,000, 2022) carry older values. In North America, Mexico (221,000, 2022) and the United States (0 through 2022) carry older values.

Largest Changes in Manganese Production, 2024-2025

Ghana recorded the largest increase, rising from 1,280,000 tonnes in 2024 to 2,000,000 in 2025 (up 720,000, about 56 percent). Gabon rose from 4,640,000 to 5,000,000 (up 360,000, about 8 percent), South Africa from 7,490,000 to 7,600,000 (up 110,000), Brazil by 95,000, India by 59,000, China by 10,000, and Ivory Coast by 10,000.

Australia (1,600,000) was the only listed country that held its level. No listed country recorded a decline. The World total rose from 18,700,000 to 20,000,000 tonnes (up 1,300,000, about 7 percent), and Ghana contributed 720,000 tonnes of that increase, about 55 percent of it.

The 2024 figures in this release are revised from earlier values, most notably Australia (revised down from 2,800,000 to 1,600,000 tonnes), Ghana (up from 820,000 to 1,280,000), Brazil (up from 590,000 to 705,000), and China (down from 770,000 to 690,000).

Methodology

The earlier figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national manganese production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The earlier series covers 2020-2024. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 where available; countries not reported individually keep their latest available Our World in Data values from 2024 or earlier. Values refer to mine production of manganese content, in tonnes, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. The source reports production in thousand-ton units for 2024-2025; values here are expressed in tonnes. The sum of individually reported country estimates does not equal the reported World total because the source applies rounding and other adjustments at the country and World levels. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
