Which country had the highest mat leaves food supply in 2023? Argentina ranked first by total food supply, with 952,789 tonnes, followed by Brazil with 697,330 tonnes and Paraguay with 152,658 tonnes. Paraguay had the highest listed food supply per person, at 61.11 grams per day. The three countries accounted for 96.1 percent of the annual listed total. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Uruguay placed fourth at 29,525 tonnes, with Syria fifth at 28,105 and Chile sixth at 4,711. Spain, Türkiye, Lebanon and the United States closed the top ten between 949 and 2,958 tonnes. The top three held 96.1 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 99.2 percent. Brazil's listed food supply rose by 126,521 tonnes from 2022 to 2023, reaching 697,330 tonnes, an increase of 22.2 percent. Argentina added 57,216 tonnes, while Türkiye increased by 482 tonnes, or 60.7 percent, from a smaller base. In contrast, Paraguay fell by 49,693 tonnes, a decrease of 24.6 percent. Syria declined by 2,416 tonnes and Uruguay by 1,238 tonnes. Across the 99 countries with values in both years, the combined total rose from 1,745,065 to 1,875,523 tonnes, an increase of 130,458 tonnes, or 7.5 percent. For the 92 countries with values in both 2019 and 2023, the combined listed total increased from 1,483,003 to 1,875,522 tonnes, a rise of 392,519 tonnes, or 26.5 percent. Brazil added 211,195 tonnes, accounting for 53.8 percent of the net increase, while Argentina added 151,716 tonnes and Paraguay added 30,753 tonnes. Spain and Türkiye also recorded increases. Syria, Uruguay and Chile were among the countries with declines. These figures describe changes in reported food supply and do not establish the reasons behind them. Paraguay recorded the highest listed food supply per person in 2023, at 61.11 grams per day. Argentina ranked second at 57.32 grams, followed by Uruguay at 23.87 grams and Brazil at 9.05 grams. Syria ranked fifth at 3.26 grams per person per day. The per-person ranking differs from the total-volume ranking: Argentina led by tonnage, while Paraguay led on a per-person basis. The figures cover FAO-reported mat leaves food supply for 2019-2023, expressed in tonnes and grams per person per day. The dataset includes 105 countries and areas that reported a value in at least one year; 101 have a reported value for 2023. Annual listed totals sum reporting countries with values for the relevant year. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries with values in both years. Reported zeros are retained as values, while blanks are treated as missing data. The Czech Republic reported 255.86 tonnes in 2021 and a reported zero in both 2022 and 2023, while Saudi Arabia fell from 345.01 tonnes in 2021 to 2.58 tonnes in 2022. Large changes in individual country series should not be interpreted as evidence of a specific cause without additional information. These figures describe food available for human consumption and do not directly measure actual intake. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report mat leaves food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing values. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.

Paraguay led per person in 2023, ahead of Argentina at 57.32 grams per day in the same reported listed table that year, ahead of Uruguay in third.
How much did the combined total change from 2022 to 2023?
The total for the 99 countries with values in both years increased by 130,458 tonnes, or 7.5 percent, over the annual comparison period, reaching the higher 2023 level.
Why did Paraguay's listed supply fall in 2023?
Its reported value fell by 49,693 tonnes compared with 2022. The data show the change but do not establish its cause in that year from the reported values alone.
Do these figures show how much people actually consumed?
No. They measure food available for human consumption in the reference year, not the amount of mat actually consumed by individual people in each year.
