Egypt Records the Largest Annual Decline

Egypt lost 97 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 0.8 percent to 11,774 tonnes. The United States lost 94.19 tonnes, down 20.5 percent. Liberia shed 72.44 tonnes, down 72.4 percent to 27.56 tonnes. Portugal added 45.16 tonnes from 14.89 tonnes. Belgium added 124.66 tonnes, up 23.3 percent. Namibia added 145 tonnes, up 3.0 percent. The 40 countries with reported values in both years rose from 18,748 tonnes to 18,764 tonnes, up 16 tonnes, or 0.1 percent. New Zealand first reported 21.72 tonnes in 2023.

Syria Records the Largest Five-Year Decline

Between 2019 and 2023, the 37 countries with reported values in both years fell from 20,850 tonnes to 18,735 tonnes, down 2,115 tonnes, or 10.1 percent. Syria lost 1,476 tonnes, down 90.1 percent. Egypt shed 1,013 tonnes, down 7.9 percent. Saudi Arabia gave up 268.55 tonnes, down 41.0 percent. Namibia added 98 tonnes, up 2.0 percent. Sweden added 122.33 tonnes from 17.12 tonnes. Belgium added 486.57 tonnes, up 281.3 percent.

Namibia Leads Per Person

Namibia ranked first in 2023 at 4.58 grams per person per day, followed by Egypt at 0.28 grams and Belgium at 0.15 grams. Macau reported 0.04 grams. Most reporting countries show very small daily values, so the per-person ranking rests on a sparse table.

What the Data Covers

The dataset follows the FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts item for meat of pigeons and other birds not elsewhere specified, fresh, chilled or frozen. It reports food supply available for human consumption in tonnes and grams per person per day. The listed annual total includes countries with a reported value for that year, while year-to-year comparisons use only countries with values in both years. A reported zero is distinct from a blank value, which indicates missing data.

Lesotho fell from 11.20 tonnes in 2022 to a reported zero in 2023, and Timor-Leste from 1.02 tonnes to zero; Latvia and Morocco also reported zero in 2023. Reported zeros are retained as supplied by FAO. Whether they reflect real changes in availability or changes in reporting cannot be determined from this table alone.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report pigeon and other bird meat food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes are calculated relative to the earlier year. Percentage changes from a zero baseline are not reported. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing values. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country had the largest pigeon and other bird meat supply in 2023?

Egypt ranked first with 11,774 tonnes in 2023, accounting for 62.7 percent of the listed total in the same listed table that year, with Namibia second.

Which country had the highest supply per person?

Namibia led per person in 2023, followed by Egypt at 0.28 grams per day in the same listed table that year, ahead of Belgium in third.

How did the listed supply change from 2022 to 2023?

Across the 40 countries reporting in both years, the total rose slightly over the year, using the same reporting countries in each year of the comparison.

Which country recorded the largest five-year decline?

Syria recorded the largest reported decline, falling from 1,638 tonnes in 2019 to 162 tonnes in 2023 over the five-year comparison period, the sharpest fall in the table.

Do these figures measure actual meat consumption?

No. They measure the reported food available for human consumption in the reference year, not the quantity of pigeon meat actually eaten by individual people in each year.
