Uganda reported 163 tonnes of millet imports in 2020 and 29,310 tonnes in 2024, climbing into second place over the four-year period. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Millet, 2020-2024, pairing import quantity in tonnes with import value in current US dollars. The table lists 158 countries; 108 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is 352,689 tonnes. The 2024 country list for millet imports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

Millet Imports by Country in 2024

Indonesia was the largest millet importer in the 2024 listed data with 47,541 tonnes, followed by Uganda with 29,310 tonnes and Poland with 23,781 tonnes. Germany ranked fourth with 22,536 tonnes, ahead of Belgium (21,910 tonnes), Türkiye (17,679 tonnes), the United Kingdom (13,789 tonnes) and the Philippines (12,465 tonnes). Indonesia also led on import value at 17,239,000 US dollars, followed by Germany (12,408,000) and Belgium (11,981,000).

Uganda's four-year climb accounts for the largest absolute gain in either window: from 163 tonnes to 29,310 tonnes, an increase of 29,147 tonnes that alone outweighs Indonesia's 28,005-tonne retreat over the same span. No percentage accompanies a move from a 163-tonne base; the absolute gain carries the story.

Indonesia holds 13.5 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 1.62 times Uganda; the top three together hold 28.5 percent, the top five 41.1 percent and the top ten 60.3 percent. Buying spreads across continents without a dominant bloc, with Indonesia and the Philippines in Asia, Uganda in Africa, Poland, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands (10,902 tonnes) in Europe, Türkiye across two continents, and Canada (12,031 tonnes) and the United States in North America.

Millet Import Moves Between 2023 and 2024

Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (104 countries with data in both years) rose from 323,888 tonnes to 351,451 tonnes, a change of 27,563 tonnes (8.5 percent). The totals listed for each year were 388,548 tonnes (138 reporters) and 352,689 tonnes (108 reporters); 34 countries reporting in 2023 (64,660 tonnes combined, led by the United Arab Emirates with 20,375 and Kenya with 19,564 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Uganda added 18,583 tonnes (up 173.2 percent) and Poland 12,890 tonnes (up 118.4 percent). China added 7,007 tonnes from a reported 0 in 2023, with no percentage stated. Türkiye fell 11,221 tonnes (down 38.8 percent) and Indonesia 9,512 tonnes (down 16.7 percent).

Millet Imports in 2024 Against 2020

Across the 107 countries reporting in both years, total imports fell from 376,230 tonnes in 2020 to 352,689 tonnes in 2024, a change of -23,541 tonnes (-6.3 percent). The totals listed for each year were 454,213 tonnes (142 reporters) and 352,689 tonnes (108 reporters); 35 countries reporting in 2020 (77,983 tonnes combined, led by Nepal with 21,074 and the United Arab Emirates with 18,082 tonnes) did not report in 2024, while Samoa (0.47 tonnes) is the only 2024 reporter absent in 2020. Poland added 14,251 tonnes (up 149.5 percent). Indonesia fell 28,005 tonnes (down 37.1 percent) and the United Kingdom 11,747 tonnes (down 46.0 percent).

Methodology

Yearly reporter totals sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for millet imports, 2020-2024. Change calculations include only countries reporting quantities in both endpoint years; countries entering or leaving the series are shown separately. Displayed quantities keep two decimals below 1,000 tonnes and whole tonnes above, while values are full current US dollars and are not inflation-adjusted. The 2024 ranking and shares use listed quantities, not values. A zero is a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. Partner-sourced gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and bilateral pairs are not fully reconciled, so an import record and its mirror export can differ.
