Miscellaneous Foods Consumption by Country

In 2023, the United Kingdom held 831 thousand tonnes of listed miscellaneous foods supply, 13.3 percent of a 6,255-thousand-tonne total spread across 144 reporters. The five-year net change is just minus 17 thousand tonnes, because Norway's 309-thousand-tonne fall and Australia's 138-thousand-tonne fall nearly cancel gains in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Cambodia. Grenada recorded the highest per-capita figure at 57.19 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Miscellaneous Foods Consumption

The United Kingdom leads at 831 thousand tonnes, 2.47 times the Philippines at 336. Per capita the order belongs to small island reporters: Grenada at 57.19 kilograms from 7 thousand tonnes, then Barbados at 49.89 and Nauru at 42.70 kilograms. The United Kingdom records 12.11 kilograms per person.

Miscellaneous Foods Supply at a Glance

  • The United Kingdom had the largest listed miscellaneous foods supply in 2023 at 831 thousand tonnes.
  • The Philippines ranked second at 336 thousand tonnes, followed by Saudi Arabia at 306 thousand tonnes.
  • Grenada had the highest per-capita food supply at 57.19 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 6,255 thousand tonnes across 144 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 143 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed miscellaneous foods supply decreased by 17 thousand tonnes, or 0.3 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The five-year window nets to almost nothing because the largest moves point in opposite directions. Norway fell 309 thousand tonnes (down 71.4 percent) and Australia 138 thousand tonnes (down 33.8 percent), while Saudi Arabia added 137 thousand tonnes, Hong Kong and the Philippines 114 thousand tonnes each, and Cambodia 85 thousand tonnes. Cuba, with 17 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while the United States entered with 88 thousand tonnes.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 144 reporters with data in both years fell by 226 thousand tonnes, or 3.5 percent. The United States, Australia, Mozambique and Israel accounted for most of the largest declines, while Cambodia, Venezuela, the Philippines and Iraq recorded notable gains. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of miscellaneous foods actually eaten.

Miscellaneous Foods Consumption by Country in 2023

The 2023 table is led by the United Kingdom at 831 thousand tonnes, with the Philippines second at 336 and Saudi Arabia third at 306. Australia and Hong Kong complete the top five at 270 and 267 thousand tonnes, respectively.

The United Kingdom holds 13.3 percent of the 6,255-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 23.5 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 32.1 percent and the top ten 48.4 percent. The top ten together hold less than half of the listed total.

United States Falls 82 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Declines 3.5 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 144 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply decreased from 6,481 thousand tonnes to 6,255 thousand tonnes, a decline of 226 thousand tonnes (3.5 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 144 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. The United States fell 82 thousand tonnes (down 48.2 percent), Australia fell 81 thousand tonnes (down 23.1 percent), Mozambique fell 65 thousand tonnes (down 83.3 percent) and Israel fell 53 thousand tonnes (down 70.7 percent), while Cambodia added 66 thousand tonnes (up 104.8 percent), Venezuela added 47 thousand tonnes (up 87.0 percent), the Philippines added 42 thousand tonnes (up 14.3 percent) and Iraq added 37 thousand tonnes (up 25.5 percent).

Norway Falls 309 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Edges Down 0.3 Percent Since 2019

For the 143 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply eased from 6,184 thousand tonnes to 6,167 thousand tonnes, a decline of 17 thousand tonnes (0.3 percent). The 2019 total includes 144 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 144; Cuba, with 17 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while the United States entered with 88 thousand tonnes. Norway fell 309 thousand tonnes (down 71.4 percent), Australia fell 138 thousand tonnes (down 33.8 percent), Myanmar fell 128 thousand tonnes (down 97.7 percent) and Israel fell 71 thousand tonnes (down 76.3 percent), while Saudi Arabia added 137 thousand tonnes (up 81.1 percent), Hong Kong added 114 thousand tonnes (up 74.5 percent), the Philippines added 114 thousand tonnes (up 51.4 percent) and Cambodia added 85 thousand tonnes (up 193.2 percent).

With the net change at minus 17 thousand tonnes, shares of the increase stop meaning much; the honest reading is offsetting moves of several hundred thousand tonnes on each side. Per capita, Grenada's 57.19 kilograms from 7 thousand tonnes lead Barbados at 49.89 kilograms, while the United Kingdom, first by total, records 12.11 kilograms.

What Does the Miscellaneous Foods Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Miscellaneous recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of miscellaneous foods people actually ate. Foods recorded under their own items sit outside this residual figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Miscellaneous Foods Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, the United Kingdom had the largest listed miscellaneous foods supply among the 144 reporters with reported values, at 831 thousand tonnes. The Philippines ranked second at 336 thousand tonnes, while Saudi Arabia ranked third at 306 thousand tonnes. Grenada had the highest per-capita miscellaneous foods food supply at 57.19 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of miscellaneous foods actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Miscellaneous from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 145 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 6,255 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 144 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the five-year net change only minus 17 thousand tonnes?

Norway fell 309 thousand tonnes and Australia 138 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, while Saudi Arabia added 137 thousand tonnes, Hong Kong and the Philippines 114 thousand tonnes each, and Cambodia 85 thousand tonnes. The opposing moves nearly cancel around a 6,167-thousand-tonne common total.

Why did the United States both enter and fall in this table?

The United States has no reported 2019 value, so it sits outside the 2019 to 2023 comparison, entering with 88 thousand tonnes in 2023. Between 2022 and 2023 it fell from 170 to 88 thousand tonnes (down 48.2 percent), the largest single-year fall in the table.

Is the food supply of miscellaneous foods the same as food eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
