Mixed Grain Flour Consumption by Country
The United Kingdom held 19,664 tonnes of listed mixed grain flour food supply in 2023, 24.9 percent of a 78,979-tonne total, only 1.25 times Romania at 15,677 tonnes. The Czech Republic rose from 620 tonnes in 2022 to 11,892 in 2023 and from 2,065 tonnes in 2019, driving gains of 11,272 and 9,827 tonnes in the two comparison periods. Serbia had the highest per-capita value at 4.06 grams per person per day, based on a listed food supply of 10,036 tonnes.
The United Kingdom leads at 19,664 tonnes, followed by Romania at 15,677 and the Czech Republic at 11,892, with Serbia fourth at 10,036 and France fifth at 9,244. Per capita Serbia leads at 4.06 grams per person per day, followed by Lithuania at 3.69 and the Czech Republic at 3.01 grams. The FAO dataset contains 70 reporters with a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023, although only 60 have a reported 2023 quantity. The United Kingdom, Romania and the Czech Republic together hold 59.8 percent of the listed total. The Czech Republic's rise from 620 to 11,892 tonnes in the single year and from 2,065 over five years exceeds the net change in both windows. The United Kingdom fell 15.3 percent over five years against its single-year doubling, while Saudi Arabia, Comoros and Slovakia fell sharply in one or both windows. The 2023 table is led by the United Kingdom at 19,664 tonnes, with Romania second at 15,677 and the Czech Republic third at 11,892. Serbia and France complete the top five at 10,036 and 9,244 tonnes, respectively. The top three reporters accounted for 59.8 percent of the listed total, the top five 84.2 percent and the top ten 96.0 percent. The gap between first and second is 3,987 tonnes. Per capita, Serbia's 4.06 grams per person per day lead Lithuania at 3.69 grams. Among the 57 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 59,825 tonnes to 78,806 tonnes, a gain of 18,982 tonnes (31.7 percent). The two years share the same 57 reporters in the comparison; Chile, Mauritius and South Korea entered with a combined 173 tonnes and no reporter left. The Czech Republic added 11,272 tonnes from 620 tonnes, the United Kingdom added 9,801 tonnes (up 99.4 percent), Lithuania added 1,671 tonnes (up 77.0 percent) and Saudi Arabia added 749 tonnes from 24 tonnes. On the declining side, Romania fell 1,800 tonnes (down 10.3 percent), Sweden fell 1,232 tonnes (down 61.5 percent), Comoros fell 648 tonnes (down 92.6 percent) and Slovakia fell 524 tonnes (down 61.1 percent). The Czech Republic and the United Kingdom together added 21,073 tonnes, more than the overall net increase of 18,982 tonnes, as declines elsewhere offset part of their gains. For the 49 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 73,328 tonnes to 76,133 tonnes, a gain of 2,805 tonnes (3.8 percent). The 2019 universe includes 54 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 universe includes 60; five reporters with a combined 282 tonnes left the comparison, while 11 reporters with a combined 2,846 tonnes entered, led by Austria at 2,391 tonnes. The Czech Republic added 9,827 tonnes (up 475.9 percent), Lithuania added 3,095 tonnes (up 415.1 percent) and Romania added 1,112 tonnes (up 7.6 percent). On the declining side, the United Kingdom fell 3,543 tonnes (down 15.3 percent), Saudi Arabia fell 1,961 tonnes (down 71.7 percent), Serbia fell 1,164 tonnes (down 10.4 percent), the Philippines fell 1,109 tonnes (down 41.5 percent) and Slovakia fell 1,096 tonnes (down 76.7 percent). The Czech Republic alone added 9,827 tonnes, more than three times the overall net increase of 2,805 tonnes, as declines elsewhere offset much of the gain. FAO mixed grain flour food supply measures the amount of mixed grain flour available for human consumption during the reference period, not the amount actually eaten by consumers. The per-capita value expresses this reported food supply in population terms, showing how much was available per person per day. Serbia records the highest value at 4.06 grams. In 2023, FAO data recorded 78,979 tonnes of listed mixed grain flour food supply across 60 reporters. The United Kingdom had the largest total at 19,664 tonnes, followed by Romania at 15,677 tonnes and the Czech Republic at 11,892 tonnes. Serbia had the highest per-capita food supply at 4.06 grams per person per day. These figures represent mixed grain flour available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of how much mixed grain flour people actually ate. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (Element 5141, tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 665, g/capita/day) for Flour of mixed grain from 2019 through 2023. The food supply quantity measure represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 70 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Table quantities are shown in tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports food supply quantity in tonnes and in grams per capita per day. The listed total of 78,979 tonnes is the sum of the 60 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. Mixed Grain Flour Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the Czech Republic decide both windows?
The Czech Republic added 11,272 tonnes between 2022 and 2023 against a net listed gain of 18,982 tonnes, and 9,827 tonnes between 2019 and 2023 against a net gain of 2,805. Its single-year rise came from 620 tonnes and its five-year rise from 2,065 tonnes.
Why did the United Kingdom fall over five years but double in one year?
The United Kingdom fell 3,543 tonnes between 2019 and 2023 after rising 9,801 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, from 9,863 to 19,664 tonnes. The figures record these moves, but they do not identify what caused them.
Is mixed grain flour food supply the same as flour actually eaten?
No. The FAO food supply quantity measure records food available for human consumption. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food availability and actual dietary intake are not the same.
