Non-Hydro Renewables Capacity by Country

Non-hydro renewables capacity by country measures installed capacity from wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and other non-hydro renewable sources for each country, in gigawatts (GW). The series excludes hydroelectric capacity, which is reported separately. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 210 countries, with 206 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 3,192.44 GW in 2024, up from 2,613.62 GW in 2023.

China (1,441.00 GW) held about 45% of world non-hydro capacity in 2024 — about 3.9 times the United States (371.32 GW). Germany (172.81 GW), India (156.78 GW) and Japan (104.12 GW) completed the top five.

China accounted for about 45.1% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 56.8%, the top three about 62.2%, the top five about 70.4%, and the top ten about 81.0%.

China accounted for most of the 2024 capacity increase

China recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 1,083.10 to 1,441.00 GW (+357.90 GW, about 33.0%). The world total rose from 2,613.62 to 3,192.44 GW (+578.82 GW, about 22.1%), so China alone accounted for about 62% of the world increase. Ukraine recorded the largest decline among reported country pairs, falling from 10.12 to 7.66 GW (-2.46 GW, about 24.3%).

Double-digit growth reached far beyond China

China (+33.0%), Brazil (+22.8%), India (+22.2%), the United States (+16.3%) and Germany (+12.0%) all expanded at double-digit rates. China added 357.90 GW on its own, while India added 28.44 GW and Brazil 19.32 GW. Ukraine was the clearest exception among the major holders, with capacity falling 24.3% from the previous year.

Non-hydro capacity has more than doubled since 2019

Reported world values were 1,353.67 GW in 2019, 1,610.04 GW in 2020, 1,854.27 GW in 2021, 2,141.94 GW in 2022, 2,613.62 GW in 2023 and 3,192.44 GW in 2024. Capacity increased every year, with the largest annual additions occurring in the final two years of the series. Capacity ended about 135.8% above the 2019 level, meaning the global non-hydro renewable fleet was more than twice as large by 2024.

Non-hydro renewables now dominate renewable capacity

Non-hydro renewables accounted for 3,192.44 GW of the 4,421.96 GW of renewable capacity reported worldwide in 2024, or about 72.2%. Hydro accounted for the remaining 1,229.52 GW. The balance has changed sharply since 2019, when non-hydro renewables represented about 54.1% of global renewable capacity. The ranking reflects installed capacity, not electricity generated.

The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics.
