Renewables and Other Energy Consumption by Country
Renewables and other energy consumption by country measures primary energy from renewables and other sources consumed in each country, expressed in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The EIA aggregates hydropower and renewable sources under its "Renewables and other" category for primary energy production and consumption. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 214 countries and territories, with 214 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 42.6639 quad Btu in 2024, up from 39.3998 quad Btu in 2023.
China (12.7521 quad Btu) led in 2024, about 1.5 times the United States (8.6992 quad Btu). Brazil (2.6584 quad Btu), India (1.6990 quad Btu) and Canada (1.4133 quad Btu) completed the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero. China accounted for about 29.9% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 50.3%, the top three about 56.5%, the top five about 63.8%, and the top ten about 74.5%. China recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 10.7608 to 12.7521 quad Btu (+1.9913 quad Btu, about 18.5%). The world total rose from 39.3998 to 42.6639 quad Btu (+3.2641 quad Btu, about 8.3%), so China alone accounted for about 61% of the world increase. Japan recorded the largest absolute decline, falling from 1.1446 to 1.0063 quad Btu (-0.1383 quad Btu, about 12.1%). The entire top five grew: China (+18.5%), India (+5.7%), the United States (+4.9%), Brazil (+3.7%) and Canada (+1.7%). China grew more than three times faster than the United States in percentage terms. Japan recorded a 12.1% decline, the largest percentage decrease among the ten largest consumers. Reported world values were 32.0889 quad Btu in 2019, 33.3614 quad Btu in 2020, 35.3497 quad Btu in 2021, 37.9064 quad Btu in 2022, 39.3998 quad Btu in 2023 and 42.6639 quad Btu in 2024. Consumption ended about 33.0% above the 2019 level, with growth in every year. China consumed 12.7521 quad Btu in 2024 compared with 13.2751 quad Btu in production, a difference of 0.5230 quad Btu. The top five countries were the same in both consumption and production rankings. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual primary energy consumption under the EIA's "Renewables and other" category, expressed in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers the EIA's "Renewables and other" consumption series; nuclear energy, fossil energy sources and production are reported separately in the source.
