Indonesia Returns to Third Place

Indonesia added 7,513 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 470.7 percent from 1,596 to 9,109 tonnes. India added 6,312 tonnes, up 13.5 percent. China added 4,935 tonnes, up 20.8 percent. Yemen added 1,665 tonnes, up 242.2 percent. Saudi Arabia lost 5,685 tonnes, down 42.0 percent. The Emirates shed 2,377 tonnes, down 87.1 percent. Bangladesh gave up 2,005 tonnes, down 27.4 percent. Nepal fell 1,047 tonnes, down 62.4 percent. The 171 countries with reported values in both 2022 and 2023 rose from 151,894 tonnes to 155,580 tonnes, up 3,686 tonnes, or 2.4 percent, with no entries or exits between those two years.

How Country Supply Changed from 2019 to 2023

Between 2019 and 2023, the 168 countries with reported values in both years surged from 112,453 tonnes to 155,561 tonnes, up 43,108 tonnes, or 38.3 percent. China added 25,697 tonnes, up 880.3 percent from 2,919, accounting for 59.6 percent of the net gain. India added 12,317 tonnes, up 30.3 percent. Laos added 5,980 tonnes, up 235.5 percent, rising from 2,539 tonnes in 2019 to 8,519 tonnes in 2023. Yemen added 2,101 tonnes, up 837.8 percent. Türkiye added 2,009 tonnes, up 854.2 percent. Indonesia lost 5,616 tonnes, down 38.1 percent. Saudi Arabia shed 1,927 tonnes, down 19.7 percent. The Emirates gave up 1,510 tonnes, down 81.1 percent. Cuba and Kiribati stopped reporting values after 2019, while Micronesia, Nauru and Uzbekistan first reported values in the window.

Laos Ranks First in Food Supply per Person

Laos ranked first in 2023, followed by Bhutan at 2.84 grams per person per day. Grenada placed third at 2.24 grams, with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at 1.25. Saudi Arabia reported 0.65 grams, with Trinidad and Tobago at 0.56 and Maldives at 0.55. Saint Lucia, Kuwait and Bahrain followed below 0.5 grams. India, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten. Total tonnage and per-person figures describe different measures: the first reflects overall volume, the second adjusts for population.

What the FAO Data Measures

Nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, raw, for human consumption are grouped in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. The dataset includes 173 countries and areas that reported a value in at least one year; 171 have a reported value for 2023. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas for each year, excluding aggregate rows. Comparisons between years use only countries and areas with values at both endpoints. A reported zero is retained as zero, while a blank cell indicates missing data. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report nutmeg, mace and cardamom food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing values. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.
