FAO Food Balances data record 28,697 thousand tonnes of listed nuts food supply in 2023 across 175 reporters with reported values. The United States accounts for 3,408 thousand tonnes of that total, just ahead of India at 3,176 thousand tonnes and China at 3,136 thousand tonnes. Switzerland records the highest per-capita food supply at 30.20 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values in individual years.

  • Among 175 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed nuts food supply increased by 3,836 thousand tonnes, or 15.4 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

In 2023, the United States led listed nuts food supply at 3,408 thousand tonnes, with India second at 3,176 thousand tonnes and China third at 3,136 thousand tonnes. Germany followed at 2,095 thousand tonnes and Türkiye at 1,272 thousand tonnes after a 25.1 percent single-year jump. Switzerland leads the per-capita ranking at 30.20 kilograms per person per year, followed by Qatar at 27.03 kilograms.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 175 reporters with data in both years rose from 28,385 thousand tonnes to 28,697 thousand tonnes, a gain of 312 thousand tonnes (1.1 percent). India's 394-thousand-tonne fall was outweighed by gains in Iran, Türkiye, Russia and Saudi Arabia against declines in China, South Korea and Germany. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 15.4 percent, led by India, Vietnam and Türkiye. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of nuts actually eaten.

Nuts Consumption by Country in 2023

The United States holds 3,408 thousand tonnes, or 11.9 percent of the 28,697-thousand-tonne listed total. India follows at 3,176 thousand tonnes (11.1 percent) and China at 3,136 thousand tonnes (10.9 percent), with Germany fourth at 2,095 thousand tonnes and Türkiye fifth at 1,272 thousand tonnes.

The top three reporters hold 33.9 percent of the listed total, the top five 45.6 percent and the top ten 61.0 percent. The gap between first and third is just 272 thousand tonnes, under one percent of the listed total.

Nuts Food Supply Grows 1.1 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 175 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 28,385 thousand tonnes to 28,697 thousand tonnes, a gain of 312 thousand tonnes (1.1 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 175 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. India fell 394 thousand tonnes (down 11.0 percent), while Iran added 306 thousand tonnes (up 40.4 percent), Türkiye added 255 thousand tonnes (up 25.1 percent), Russia added 182 thousand tonnes (up 91.5 percent) and Saudi Arabia added 176 thousand tonnes (up 61.8 percent). China fell 197 thousand tonnes (down 5.9 percent), South Korea fell 196 thousand tonnes (down 27.8 percent) and Germany fell 182 thousand tonnes (down 8.0 percent).

India, Vietnam and Türkiye Drive 15.4 Percent Growth Since 2019

For the 175 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 24,861 thousand tonnes to 28,697 thousand tonnes, a gain of 3,836 thousand tonnes (15.4 percent). The 2019 total includes 176 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 175; Cuba, with 1 thousand tonne in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 955 thousand tonnes (up 43.0 percent), Vietnam added 659 thousand tonnes (up 211.2 percent), Türkiye added 389 thousand tonnes (up 44.1 percent), Saudi Arabia added 216 thousand tonnes (up 88.2 percent), Bangladesh added 187 thousand tonnes (up 105.6 percent), Morocco added 175 thousand tonnes (up 135.7 percent) and Iran added 167 thousand tonnes (up 18.6 percent), while South Korea fell 152 thousand tonnes (down 23.0 percent).

India accounts for 24.9 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by Vietnam at 17.2 percent, with Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Morocco and Iran each adding between 167 and 389 thousand tonnes. On a per-capita basis, the ranking looks quite different: Switzerland records 30.20 kilograms and Qatar 27.03 kilograms, with Germany fourth at 24.77 and Canada seventh at 22.49 kilograms, while the three volume leaders sit below 10 kilograms per person.

What Does Nuts Consumption Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the Nuts and products figure used here represents the quantity recorded under the Food element. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much nuts people actually consumed. Groundnuts recorded under their own item sit outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Quick Answer

In 2023, the United States had the largest listed nuts food supply among the 175 reporters with reported values, at 3,408 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 3,176 thousand tonnes, while China ranked third at 3,136 thousand tonnes. Switzerland had the highest per-capita nuts food supply at 30.20 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of nuts actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Nuts and products from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer.

The reporter universe contains 176 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 28,697 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 175 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country has the largest nuts food supply?

The United States led in 2023 with 3,408 thousand tonnes against India's 3,176 thousand tonnes and China's 3,136 thousand tonnes, a leader ratio of just 1.07 to one. The gap between first and third is 272 thousand tonnes.

Which countries have the highest per-capita nuts food supply?

Switzerland recorded 30.20 kilograms per person in 2023, followed by Qatar at 27.03 kilograms, Germany at 24.77 kilograms and Canada at 22.49 kilograms. The per-capita ranking looks quite different from the totals ranking, where the United States, India and China lead.Does this figure show how much nuts people actually eat?|No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
