Fruit, Nuts, Peel, Sugar Preserved Consumption by Country

In 2023, China had the largest reported food supply of fruit, nuts and peel preserved in sugar, at 135,044 tonnes, accounting for 55.4 percent of the 243,905-tonne total across countries with reported values. Italy ranked second at 8,000 tonnes, followed by South Korea at 7,412 tonnes. Samoa had the highest reported supply per person, at 2.08 grams per day, ahead of Macau at 1.08 grams. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

The United Kingdom placed fourth at 7,179 tonnes, with the Netherlands fifth at 6,839 and Germany sixth at 6,180. The United States, Malaysia, Spain and India closed the top ten between 4,639 and 6,029 tonnes. The top three held 61.7 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 67.4 percent. China had the highest listed food supply, while Samoa had the highest per-capita food supply.

• Chinese sugar-preserved supply grows: up 12,652 tonnes, or 10.3 percent, the biggest latest-year gain.
• Spanish sugar-preserved supply jumps: up 5,030 tonnes from 716, the fastest percentage move.
• Kazakh sugar-preserved supply halves: down 4,397 tonnes, or 60.6 percent, falling out of the top ten.
• Belarusian sugar-preserved supply halves: down 2,906 tonnes, or 60.1 percent, to a minor level.

China Leads the 2023 Supply of Fruit, Nuts and Peel Preserved in Sugar

China added 12,652 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 10.3 percent to 135,044 tonnes. Spain added 5,030 tonnes from 716. Italy added 810 tonnes, up 11.3 percent. Kazakhstan lost 4,397 tonnes, down 60.6 percent. Belarus shed 2,906 tonnes, down 60.1 percent. The United States gave up 1,517 tonnes, down 20.1 percent. Malaysia fell 1,379 tonnes, down 18.8 percent. Argentina dropped 1,177 tonnes, down 49.5 percent. The 162 countries present in both years moved from 242,288 tonnes to 243,905 tonnes, up 1,617 tonnes, or 0.7 percent, with one departure holding a single tonne and no arrivals.

China Accounts for Most of the Five-Year Increase

Between 2019 and 2023, the 156 countries with values in both years increased their combined reported supply from 188,725 to 242,329 tonnes, a rise of 53,605 tonnes, or 28.4 percent. China accounted for 44,966 tonnes of additional supply, equivalent to 83.9 percent of the net increase. Russia added 3,378 tonnes from a 2019 baseline of 822 tonnes, while France added 2,736 tonnes from 391 tonnes. Kazakhstan gained 2,614 tonnes, and Spain added 2,601 tonnes. These large percentage changes partly reflect low starting values and should not be interpreted as equivalent changes in the amount actually consumed. Three countries left with 212 tonnes, against six arrivals with 1,575.

Samoa Ranks First in Supply per Person

Samoa's 2.08 grams a day nearly doubled Macau's 1.08 in second. Ireland and the Netherlands shared third at 1.04 grams, with French Polynesia at 0.97 and Maldives at 0.87. Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, Belarus and Hungary followed below 0.75 grams. China, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten.

Fruit, nuts and peel preserved in sugar are logged here in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. China alone holds more than half the listed total, far above any other reporting country. Small starting values produce large percentages that move few tonnes.

Spain's reported supply rose from 716 tonnes in 2022 to 5,746 tonnes in 2023, a sharp increase from a low base rather than a re-entry. Kenya, Serbia, Egypt and Tunisia each fell to a reported zero in 2023, so those zeros merit checking against the source rather than reading as confirmed collapses.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts place tonnage for human consumption under element 5141 and daily grams per person under element 665, shown for sugar-preserved fruit and peel across 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year as the base, and zero bases use none. The universe counts 165 countries once aggregates are gone, 162 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
