Peas (dry) Production by Country (2026)

Drawn from 2018-2024 FAO data across 96 territories, dry peas production by country data shows global dry peas output of roughly 14.16 million tonnes in 2024. Russia held the top dry peas producer position, with Canada and China following. European growers including France, Ukraine, and Germany round out the middle tier.

Russia and Canada Form the Top Tier of Global Output

Listed 2024 dry pea production reached about 14,157,853 tonnes worldwide. Russia accounted for 23.0% of that total with 3,251,858 tonnes, followed by Canada at 2,997,354 tonnes (21.2%) and China at 1,489,237 tonnes. The top three together supplied about 54.7% of global output. Canada’s role extends beyond volume: the country is the world’s largest dry pea exporter, supplying processing markets for split peas and pea protein isolate.

European and North American Producers Hold the Middle Tier

Canada moved from 3,580,700 tonnes in 2018 to 2,997,354 tonnes in 2024, with significant year-to-year swings reflecting weather and market conditions. The United States produced 756,550 tonnes, up from 722,530 tonnes in 2018. India held fourth place with 1,066,557 tonnes, ahead of France at 486,710 tonnes and Ukraine at 462,910 tonnes. Germany rounded out the upper middle tier with 376,000 tonnes. Pea protein demand has supported prices for yellow peas, the main processing variety.

Emerging Producers Expand Acreage in Africa and Central Asia

Ethiopia reached 399,813 tonnes in 2024, up 4% from 2018, as the crop gains traction in highland farming systems. In a smaller but notable trend, Türkiye doubled its dry pea output from 2,603 tonnes in 2018 to 5,353 tonnes in 2024. Australia produced 228,000 tonnes, Lithuania 216,170 tonnes, and Kazakhstan 168,033 tonnes. Several of these countries have expanded dry pea area in response to steady export demand and the crop’s nitrogen-fixing benefit in rotation with cereals.

2026 Outlook: Canada Projected to Retake the Lead from Russia

The 2026 estimates place Canada near 3,332,575 tonnes and Russia near 3,218,556 tonnes, reversing the 2024 order at the top. China’s estimate of 1,496,240 tonnes points to a stable third position. Ethiopia’s projected 399,559 tonnes and Ukraine’s 442,597 tonnes highlight the growth potential in specific markets. The medium-tier producers show moderate forecast dispersion, with several series containing weather-driven swings. These projections assume average growing conditions and do not account for extreme weather events or policy changes.
