Pepper (Piper spp.), Raw Consumption by Country

In 2023, Vietnam recorded the largest raw pepper food supply at 88,976 tonnes, followed by India at 78,171 tonnes and Burkina Faso at 71,472 tonnes. Burkina Faso ranked first in food supply per person at 8.5 grams per day, ahead of Tajikistan at 5.9 grams. The 2023 total across countries with reported values was 724,099 tonnes. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

The United States placed fourth at 58,372 tonnes, with Iraq fifth at 37,754 and Indonesia sixth at 37,459. China, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Tajikistan closed the top ten between 22,389 and 37,146 tonnes. The top three held 33.0 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 46.2 percent. Vietnam had the highest listed food supply, while Burkina Faso had the highest per-capita food supply.

• South Korean supply falls by 6,516 tonnes, down 91.7 percent, to 587 tonnes.

The United States Records the Largest Latest-Year Decline

The United States lost 17,374 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 22.9 percent to 58,372 tonnes. South Korea lost 6,516 tonnes, down 91.7 percent. The Emirates lost 6,384 tonnes, down 98.5 percent. Germany shed 6,114 tonnes, down 44.7 percent. Burkina Faso gave up 5,311 tonnes, down 6.9 percent. Zimbabwe added 5,503 tonnes, up 38.0 percent. Iraq added 3,926 tonnes, up 11.6 percent. Pakistan added 3,244 tonnes, up 35.2 percent. The 175 countries present in both years fell from 759,989 tonnes to 724,099 tonnes, down 35,890 tonnes, or 4.7 percent, with no entries or exits.

Vietnam and Iraq Record the Largest Five-Year Gains

Between 2019 and 2023, the 173 countries present in both years grew from 613,776 tonnes to 724,075 tonnes, up 110,299 tonnes, or 18.0 percent. Vietnam added 82,548 tonnes from 6,428, accounting for 74.8 percent of the net gain. Iraq added 35,734 tonnes from 2,020. Indonesia added 23,724 tonnes, up 172.7 percent. Burkina Faso added 17,472 tonnes, up 32.4 percent. Brazil added 9,725 tonnes, up 84.7 percent. Tajikistan lost 22,267 tonnes, down 49.9 percent. The United States shed 16,076 tonnes, down 21.6 percent. Germany gave up 12,435 tonnes, down 62.2 percent. One country left with 140 tonnes, against two arrivals with 24.

Burkina Faso Leads Raw Pepper Supply per Person

Burkina Faso's 8.5 grams a day beat Tajikistan's 5.9 in second and Sri Lanka's 3.41 in third. Zimbabwe sat fourth at 3.35 grams, with Iraq at 2.68 and Vietnam at 2.43. Malaysia, Antigua and Barbuda, Jordan and the Bahamas followed below 2.3 grams. Vietnam, first by volume, placed sixth per person.

Raw pepper of the Piper genus for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Small 2019 bases make the loudest five-year percentages.

Vietnam's 1,284.2 percent five-year rate divides by 6,428 tonnes and Iraq's 1,769.0 percent by 2,020 tonnes. South Korea's 91.7 percent latest fall ends at 587 tonnes and the Emirates' 98.5 percent at 96 tonnes. Madagascar fell to a reported zero in 2023 from 1,089 tonnes in 2022, so that zero merits checking against the source.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts catalogue tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for raw pepper across 2019-2023. Percentage changes are calculated relative to the earlier year's value. Percentage changes are not calculated when the earlier value is zero. The dataset covers 176 reporting countries after regional and other aggregate entries are excluded. Of these, 175 have reported values for 2023. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 724,099 tonnes is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. Reported zeros are retained as zero values, while blank cells are treated as missing data.
