Key Takeaways

In 2023, the United States had the largest listed food supply of pineapples at 6,181 thousand tonnes, with Indonesia second at 2,468 thousand tonnes and China third at 2,267 thousand tonnes. Brazil followed at 1,845 thousand tonnes and India at 1,670 thousand tonnes. Guyana's 85.05 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by Maldives at 43.41 kilograms.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years moved from 31,356 thousand tonnes to 31,375 thousand tonnes, a gain of just 19 thousand tonnes (0.1 percent), as the Philippines' 874-thousand-tonne surge nearly cancelled declines in Germany, the United States, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and Thailand. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 10.6 percent, with Indonesia contributing 42.1 percent of the increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of pineapples actually eaten.

Indonesia contributes 42.1 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by the United States at 36.6 percent and the Philippines at 24.7 percent. Ecuador's tiny 2-thousand-tonne base makes its 259-thousand-tonne gain read as 12,950.0 percent. Per capita, Guyana had the highest per-capita figure at 85.05 kilograms per person per year, based on a listed food supply of 70 thousand tonnes, followed by Maldives at 43.41 kilograms, while the United States, first by total, records 18.00 kilograms.

What Does the Pineapples Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the pineapples figure used here covers the FAO item Pineapples and products recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of the amount of pineapples people actually ate. Other fruit recorded under separate items sits outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Pineapples Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, the United States had the largest listed food supply of pineapples among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 6,181 thousand tonnes. Indonesia ranked second at 2,468 thousand tonnes and China third at 2,267 thousand tonnes. Guyana had the highest per-capita pineapples food supply at 85.05 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as the amount of pineapples actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Pineapples and products from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 31,375 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the Philippines' pineapples food supply jump 560.3 percent in one year?

The Philippines rose from 156 thousand tonnes in 2022 to 1,030 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 874 thousand tonnes. The FAO Food Balances data show the movement but do not establish its cause.

Why does Guyana lead pineapples food supply per person?

Guyana recorded 85.05 kilograms per person in 2023 from a listed food supply of 70 thousand tonnes. Maldives followed at 43.41 kilograms per person, while the United States, first by total, recorded 18.00 kilograms.

Is the food supply of pineapples the same as pineapples eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
