Plums, Dried Consumption by Country

No country dominates dried plums: the United States led 2023 with 65,353 tonnes, 1.17 times China's 55,888. France sat third at 31,577 tonnes, while Bosnia and Herzegovina topped the per-person list at 13.85 grams. The 2023 listed consumption total reached 337,063 tonnes across 170 countries, 167 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.

In 2023, the United States had the largest listed dried plum food supply at 65,353 tonnes, followed by China at 55,888 tonnes and France at 31,577 tonnes. Bosnia and Herzegovina had the highest supply per person at 13.85 grams per person per day.

Bosnia and Herzegovina placed fourth at 16,104 tonnes, ahead of Chile at 13,858 and Brazil at 9,133. Russia, Argentina, Mexico and Türkiye followed between 7,836 and 8,999 tonnes. The top three held just 45.3 percent of the listed consumption total, and the top five 54.2 percent.

• The United States advances: up 29,534 tonnes, or 82.5 percent, the biggest latest-year gain.
• France jumps: up 18,722 tonnes, or 145.6 percent, closing fast on third place.
• China climbs: up 15,379 tonnes, or 38.0 percent, holding second against France.
• Argentina retreats: down 6,741 tonnes, or 44.6 percent, with Chile down 31.0 percent.

United States Leads the 2023 Dried Plum Supply

The United States added 29,534 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, rising 82.5 percent and stretching its lead over China. France added 18,722 tonnes, up 145.6 percent to 31,577 tonnes. China added 15,379 tonnes, up 38.0 percent, and Bosnia and Herzegovina 7,049 tonnes, up 77.8 percent. Argentina gave up 6,741 tonnes, down 44.6 percent, while Chile lost 6,229 tonnes, down 31.0 percent. The United Kingdom shed 3,484 tonnes, down 41.1 percent, and Mexico 3,089 tonnes, down 28.2 percent. The 167 countries present in both years climbed from 287,089 tonnes to 337,063 tonnes, up 49,974 tonnes, or 17.4 percent, with no entries or exits.

China Drives the Five-Year Increase

Between 2019 and 2023, the 163 countries present in both years edged from 322,317 tonnes to 337,044 tonnes, up 14,727 tonnes, or 4.6 percent. China added 28,802 tonnes, doubling its 2019 level with a 106.3 percent rise and accounting for 195.6 percent of the net gain. Bosnia and Herzegovina added 15,774 tonnes from a base near 330. France added 8,378 tonnes, up 36.1 percent, and the United States 8,306 tonnes, up 14.6 percent. Chile lost 12,794 tonnes, down 48.0 percent. Russia fell 9,065 tonnes, down 50.2 percent, and Argentina 8,880 tonnes, down 51.5 percent. Three countries stopped reporting, holding 99 tonnes, against four arrivals with 19.

Bosnia and Herzegovina Leads per Person

Bosnia and Herzegovina's 13.85 grams a day towered over the field, roughly five times Armenia's 2.72 in second. Moldova sat third at 2.27 grams, with Chile at 1.93 and France at 1.30. Montenegro and North Macedonia followed near one gram. The United States, first by volume, did not crack the per-person top ten. In a table this diffuse, a modest Balkan supply translates into an outsized daily figure.

What the Dried Plums Data Covers

Dried plums available for human consumption are recorded here in tonnes and in daily grams per person, country by country, for 2019 through 2023. Each annual total sums only the countries reporting that year, leaving out regional aggregates. Tonnage shows where the bulk sits; the per-person figure shows where the available supply is highest relative to population. Because no single country holds even a fifth of supply, small shifts reorder the middle ranks quickly.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's five-year increase was nearly 4,800 percent, but that percentage reflects its very low 2019 base of about 330 tonnes.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts distinguish two element codes: 5141 for tonnage fit for human consumption and 665 for daily grams per person, tracked here for dried plums from 2019 to 2023. Rates use the earlier year as their base, with nothing stated from a zero base. The set spans 170 countries, 167 of them with 2023 values, aggregates excluded. Only countries with entries in both comparison years shape a change. The 2023 listed total of 337,063 tonnes adds up every country reporting that year. Zeros are reported, blanks are missing, and values under 1,000 carry two decimals.
