Poppy Seed Consumption by Country
Germany reported 3,699 tonnes of poppy seed food supply in 2023, 24.8 percent of the listed total. The United States came second at 3,105 tonnes and Poland third at 1,630. Per person, Latvia led at 1.77 grams. Latvia multiplied ninety-fold in the latest year, while the United States shed 1,493 tonnes. All figures count food available for human consumption, not actual intake.
Germany Holds a Narrow Lead
Germany led at 3,699 tonnes, 1.19 times the United States. Poland sat third at 1,630 tonnes, ahead of Latvia at 1,216 and Canada at 1,048. Serbia followed sixth at 1,046 tonnes, just 2 behind Canada, with Austria seventh at 1,040. The top three held 56.5 percent of the 14,924-tonne total, and the top five 71.7 percent. Of 82 countries in the file, 73 carried a 2023 value.
Across the 73 countries in both 2022 and 2023, supply eased 5.7 percent, from 15,833 tonnes, a loss of 909. Latvia added 1,203 tonnes from 13, one of the sharpest percentage rises in the file at 9,140.1 percent. Serbia added 525 tonnes, doubling from 521. The United States shed 1,493 tonnes, down 32.5 percent, the largest fall in the file. Austria shed 399 tonnes and Poland 381, while Germany shed 366. Canada added 227 tonnes back. Chile shed 98 tonnes, down 79.6 percent, the sharpest fall among small tables. Two countries left the table entirely. Among the 62 countries in both 2019 and 2023, supply fell 16.0 percent, from 17,766 tonnes, a loss of 2,842. Germany shed 1,373 tonnes and the United States 1,218, together covering nearly all of the net loss. Latvia added 934 tonnes, more than quadrupling from 282. Austria shed 852 tonnes, down 45.0 percent. Poland added 850 tonnes, doubling from 780. The United Kingdom shed 460 tonnes, down 50.9 percent, and Ireland 223. Eleven countries joined over the period, adding 0.63 tonnes, against seven departures. Serbia sat sixth at 1,046 tonnes, doubling from 521 in the latest year, yet 372 below its 2019 level of 1,418. Per person, Serbia sat second at 0.42 grams. Canada, fifth at 1,048 tonnes, added 227 in the latest year and sits at 0.07 grams per person. Austria, seventh at 1,040 tonnes, shed 399 lately and 852 over five. Latvia's 1.77 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Serbia at 0.42 and Austria at 0.31. Germany, the volume leader, sat at 0.12 grams per person, level with Poland. Slovakia and Slovenia followed at 0.17 and 0.13 grams. Canada, fifth by volume, sat at 0.07 grams. Israel sat eighth per person at 0.10 grams with 341 tonnes, and Slovakia closed the volume top ten at 338. This page follows the SUA item labelled Poppy seed and counts only its rows; World, regional and aggregate rows are not in the table. The annual listed supply total sums the countries with a 2023 value. Food here means supply available for people to eat in the reference year, not amounts eaten. Germany had the largest reported poppy seed food supply in 2023 at 3,699 tonnes, followed by the United States at 3,105 tonnes and Poland at 1,630 tonnes. Latvia ranked first by food supply per person at 1.77 grams per person per day and increased its reported supply from 13 tonnes in 2022 to 1,216 tonnes in 2023. The United States recorded the largest absolute decline, falling by 1,493 tonnes to 3,105 tonnes. For poppy seed, tonnage follows element 5141 and daily grams follow element 665 across 2019 to 2023. A change is measured from the earlier year; none is stated from a zero base. Only countries present in both compared years enter a change. A reported zero is not a blank, and blanks never stand in for zeros. The file holds 82 countries after removing World, regional and aggregate rows; 73 carry 2023 values. The numbers describe food available for human consumption. Source: FAO FAOSTAT, compiled by StatsGeo.Latvia's Ninety-Fold Jump

Frequently Asked Questions
Who led poppy seed supply?
Germany, with 3,699 tonnes in 2023, or 24.8 percent of the listed total, 1.19 times second-placed United States at 3,105 tonnes, with Poland third.
How much did Latvia's poppy seed supply increase?
Latvia rose from 13 tonnes in 2022 to 1,216 in 2023, a gain of 1,203 tonnes or 9,140.1 percent, one of the sharpest percentage rises from the smallest base.
What pulled the total down?
The United States shed 1,493 tonnes, down 32.5 percent, the largest fall in the file, with Austria shedding 399 and Poland 381 alongside Germany's 366.
Who led per person?
Latvia, at 1.77 grams per person per day in 2023, ahead of Serbia at 0.42, while volume leader Germany sat at only 0.12 grams, level with Poland.
Does this supply equal food eaten?
No. The figures measure food available for human consumption in the reference year, not actual intake, so they describe supply rather than the amounts people actually ate.
