Potato Starch Consumption by Country

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record starch of potatoes available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 25 reporters, all with a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 161,804 tonnes. Germany holds nearly half the 2023 supply — yet the five-year total barely moved, because the two biggest changes cancel each other out.

Potato Starch Consumption

Germany reported the largest 2023 supply at 79,849 tonnes, while Hong Kong recorded the highest per-capita figure at 5.10 grams per person per day.

Four Notes on a 25-Reporter Table

  • Germany holds 49.3 percent — 3.88 times Thailand in second.
  • Germany's 9,593-tonne decline and Italy's 9,101-tonne increase almost offset each other, leaving only a 1,453-tonne net gain.
  • Hong Kong and Macau lead per person (5.10 and 5.04 grams) from totals far below Germany's.
  • The latest year added 2.9 percent, led by Germany's 13.9 percent rebound.

The Net Change Is 1,453 Tonnes

The common total moved from 154,768 tonnes to 156,222, up 1,453 tonnes or 0.9 percent across 23 reporters. Germany fell 9,593 tonnes (down 10.7 percent) while Italy added 9,101 (up 174.9 percent) — the two nearly cancel, leaving only a 1,453-tonne net gain. Austria fell 3,914 tonnes (down 31.3 percent) while Saudi Arabia added 2,233 (up 52.1 percent); New Zealand added 1,742 tonnes from a reported 2019 zero, Thailand 1,003 (up 5.1 percent), Slovakia 838 (up 53.5 percent) and Morocco fell 769 (down 22.1 percent). Jordan and Panama entered with 5,582 tonnes between them, and no reporter left.

Germany Holds 49.3 Percent

Germany's 79,849 tonnes lead the 2023 table at 49.3 percent of the listed total, 3.88 times Thailand's 20,598 in second. The top three hold 70.9 percent with Italy at 14,305, the top five 84.8 percent and the top ten 96.4 percent. Hong Kong, Austria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Morocco, Slovakia and Estonia complete the ten — the remaining fifteen reporters share 3.6 percent between them.

2022 to 2023: Germany Rebounds 13.9 Percent

The common total rose from 157,189 tonnes to 161,804, up 4,615 tonnes or 2.9 percent across 25 reporters, with none entering or leaving. Germany added 9,768 tonnes (up 13.9 percent), with Hong Kong adding 4,058 (up 41.4 percent), Saudi Arabia 2,912 (up 80.8 percent), Jordan 660 (up 15.6 percent) and Macau 429 (up 48.5 percent). Italy fell 6,904 tonnes (down 32.6 percent), with Thailand down 5,041 (down 19.7 percent) and Morocco down 2,139 (down 44.1 percent).

Hong Kong Leads per Person

Hong Kong's 5.10 grams per person per day head the per-capita table from 13,850 tonnes, just ahead of Macau at 5.04 from 1,313. The per-capita figure expresses the reported food supply relative to population on a daily basis. Estonia follows at 4.64 from 2,316 tonnes, with Germany at 2.59 and Austria at 2.58 from the top of the volume list. Slovakia, Jordan, New Zealand, Thailand and Italy complete the per-person ten.

What Does Potato Starch Supply Cover?

The FAO item covers starch extracted from potatoes — a milled ingredient, not the raw tuber and not flour preparations, which each have their own article; the three are not added together here. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population, which is why Hong Kong and Macau lead per person from 13,850 and 1,313 tonnes.

Potato Starch Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

Germany had the largest 2023 listed potato-starch supply at 79,849 tonnes, while Hong Kong had the highest per-capita figure at 5.10 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 161,804 tonnes across 25 reporters, up 0.9 percent on a common-reporter basis since 2019. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten.

Methodology

Twenty-five reporters make up this file, one per table row; aggregate and regional rows are excluded, and the China country reporter remains included. Percentages compare reporters present in both endpoint years on the earlier year as base, with no percentage from a zero base; zero reports zero, blank reports nothing.

The series are FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity for starch of potatoes, element 5141 in tonnes for totals and element 665 in grams per capita per day, 2019 through 2023 — supply available for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. The 2023 listed total of 161,804 tonnes sums all 25 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the total barely move in five years?

Germany fell 9,593 tonnes while Italy added 9,101, and the two nearly cancel, leaving only a 1,453-tonne net change. The figures record the offset, not what caused either move.

How do Hong Kong and Macau lead per person from small totals?

Hong Kong reported 13,850 tonnes against 5.10 grams a day and Macau 1,313 against 5.04. The per-capita figure expresses the reported food supply relative to population on a daily basis, so small totals can top the list.

Which reporters are new since 2019?

Jordan and Panama, with 4,903 and 679.37 tonnes in 2023; together 5,582 tonnes of newcomer supply. No reporter left over the same span.
