Starchy Roots Consumption by Country
Total volume and dietary reliance point in different directions for starchy roots. China held 99,117 thousand tonnes of listed food supply in 2023, 18.2 percent of a 545,720-thousand-tonne total, but every top per-capita position belonged to Sub-Saharan Africa, led by Ghana at 443.74 kilograms per person per year. India ranked third by volume yet recorded only 32.43 kilograms per person, a reminder that large totals can sit alongside modest per-person supply.
China leads at 99,117 thousand tonnes, 1.54 times Nigeria at 64,499, with India third at 46,634 and DR Congo fourth at 43,143. Per capita the table is African throughout: Ghana at 443.74 kilograms from 14,993 thousand tonnes, then DR Congo at 407.82 and Ivory Coast at 362.14 kilograms. India, third by total, records 32.43 kilograms per person. This aggregate combines the starchy-root and tuber items included in the FAO classification, so a country's position reflects their combined food supply rather than a single crop. That mix helps explain the split picture: China and India rank high on total volume, while the highest per-capita figures are concentrated in countries where starchy roots form a larger part of the listed food supply. Nigeria, India and DR Congo led the five-year expansion, together contributing 47.8 percent of the net gain of 40,709 thousand tonnes, with Pakistan and Angola close behind. Cambodia moved the opposite way in both time windows, and the single-year change was led by the United States and India while Cambodia and Indonesia declined. The 2023 table is led by China at 99,117 thousand tonnes, with Nigeria second at 64,499 and India third at 46,634. DR Congo and the United States complete the top five at 43,143 and 19,998 thousand tonnes, respectively. China holds 18.2 percent of the 545,720-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 38.5 percent of the listed total, the top five 50.1 percent and the top ten 62.9 percent, one of the least concentrated of the food aggregates. The per-capita picture inverts the ranking: Ghana leads at 443.74 kilograms per person per year, followed by DR Congo at 407.82 and Ivory Coast at 362.14, all three far above China's 69.67 kilograms. Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 534,166 thousand tonnes to 545,720 thousand tonnes, a gain of 11,554 thousand tonnes (2.2 percent). The two years share the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. The United States added 2,465 thousand tonnes (up 14.1 percent), India added 2,462 thousand tonnes (up 5.6 percent), Nigeria added 1,430 thousand tonnes (up 2.3 percent), Tanzania added 1,261 thousand tonnes (up 14.2 percent), DR Congo added 1,251 thousand tonnes (up 3.0 percent) and Germany added 889 thousand tonnes (up 17.2 percent), while Cambodia fell 1,792 thousand tonnes (down 43.3 percent) and Indonesia fell 1,397 thousand tonnes (down 6.6 percent). The annual increase was spread across several countries, while Cambodia's sharp decline offset part of the gain. For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 505,011 thousand tonnes to 545,720 thousand tonnes, a gain of 40,709 thousand tonnes (8.1 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 1,201 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. Nigeria added 8,991 thousand tonnes (up 16.2 percent), India added 5,887 thousand tonnes (up 14.4 percent), DR Congo added 4,556 thousand tonnes (up 11.8 percent), Pakistan added 3,089 thousand tonnes (up 77.2 percent), Angola added 2,715 thousand tonnes (up 30.9 percent), China added 2,414 thousand tonnes (up 2.5 percent) and Ghana added 1,966 thousand tonnes (up 15.1 percent), while Cambodia fell 1,957 thousand tonnes (down 45.4 percent). Nigeria contributes 22.1 percent of the five-year net increase, India 14.5 percent and DR Congo 11.2 percent, so the three together account for 47.8 percent. Pakistan's 77.2 percent increase stands out for pace from a smaller base of 4,001 thousand tonnes, while Cambodia's 45.4 percent decline is the largest proportional fall among the reporters shown. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Starchy Roots recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of starchy roots people actually ate. Because it is an aggregate, it sums the food supply of the individual root and tuber items; each of those crops is also covered in a separate article. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed starchy roots food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 99,117 thousand tonnes. Nigeria ranked second at 64,499 thousand tonnes, while India ranked third at 46,634 thousand tonnes. Ghana had the highest per-capita starchy roots food supply at 443.74 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of starchy roots actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Starchy Roots from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 545,720 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the starchy roots aggregate; individual root and tuber items are treated in separate articles.Starchy Roots Food Supply at a Glance

Starchy Roots Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does India rank third by total but low per capita for starchy roots?
The FAO Food Balances data show India at 46,634 thousand tonnes in 2023 but only 32.43 kilograms per person per year. A large population raises the total while keeping the per-capita figure low. Ghana, with 14,993 thousand tonnes, records 443.74 kilograms per person.
Why did Cambodia's starchy roots food supply fall 43.3 percent in one year?
The FAO Food Balances data show Cambodia at 4,143 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 2,351 thousand tonnes in 2023. The 1,792-thousand-tonne decrease was a 43.3 percent decline. The dataset alone does not establish the cause of the change.
Is the food supply of starchy roots the same as what people ate?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
