Quinoa Consumption by Country
The United States holds 25,689 tonnes of listed quinoa supply in 2023 — 25.0 percent of the 102,936-tonne total, and 1.22 times Bolivia's 21,136 tonnes. The latest year fell 29.1 percent, led by Peru's 31,638-tonne drop, while five years netted down 21.0 percent as falls in Peru, Bolivia, France, Ecuador, Australia and Germany outweighed gains in Russia and Taiwan. Bolivia tops per person at 4.73 grams a day.
The United States sits top at 25,689 tonnes, ahead of Bolivia at 21,136 and Peru at 19,166, with Canada fourth at 5,305 and France fifth at 3,232. Per person Bolivia doubles most of the field at 4.73 grams a day, ahead of Peru at 1.55 and Israel at 0.41. The file spans 158 reporters with quinoa values, though only 151 carry a 2023 figure. The United States, Bolivia and Peru together hold 64.1 percent of the listed total, with Bolivia and Peru second and third behind the United States. Peru's fall from 50,804 to 19,166 tonnes decides the single-year comparison, beating half the net decline on its own. Over five years Peru and Bolivia together removed 20,633 tonnes, with France, Ecuador, Australia and Germany adding the next-largest falls against gains in Russia and Taiwan. The 2023 table opens with the United States at 25,689 tonnes, Bolivia second at 21,136 and Peru third at 19,166. Canada and France follow at 5,305 and 3,232 tonnes. The top three reporters accounted for 64.1 percent of the listed total, the top five 72.4 percent and the top ten 81.5 percent. The gap between first and second is 4,553 tonnes. Per capita, Bolivia's 4.73 grams per person per day lead Peru at 1.55 grams. Across the 151 reporters with values in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply moved from 145,270 tonnes to 102,936 tonnes, down 42,333 tonnes or 29.1 percent. The two years share the same 151 reporters, with none entering or leaving. Peru fell 31,638 tonnes (down 62.3 percent), France 2,125 (down 39.7 percent), China 1,759 (down 51.0 percent), the United States 1,496 (down 5.5 percent), Italy 1,310 (down 42.6 percent), Bolivia 1,248 (down 5.6 percent) and Israel 880 (down 39.0 percent). On the gaining side, Taiwan added 1,483 tonnes from a reported zero. Peru's fall from 50,804 to 19,166 tonnes against a net decline of 42,333 accounts for most of it, with France, China, Italy and Israel adding the next-largest falls. For the 139 reporters with values in both 2019 and 2023, listed supply fell from 130,213 tonnes to 102,907 tonnes, down 27,306 tonnes or 21.0 percent. The 2019 universe holds 145 reporters with values against 151 in 2023; six reporters with a combined 61 tonnes left, while 12 with a combined 29 tonnes entered. Peru fell 10,769 tonnes (down 36.0 percent), Bolivia 9,864 (down 31.8 percent), France 3,734 (down 53.6 percent), Ecuador 2,589 (down 96.2 percent), Australia 1,612 (down 50.8 percent) and Germany 1,186 (down 33.0 percent). On the gaining side, Russia added 1,149 tonnes (up 379.0 percent) and Taiwan added 1,027 tonnes (up 225.6 percent). Peru and Bolivia together removed 20,633 tonnes against a net decline of 27,306, with France, Ecuador, Australia and Germany adding the next-largest falls. Counted here is quinoa as recorded by FAO, as food available for human consumption during the reference year — not an estimate of what people actually ate. The per-capita value expresses this reported food supply in population terms, showing how much was available per person per day. Bolivia records the highest value at 4.73 grams. The United States recorded the largest 2023 listed quinoa supply at 25,689 tonnes — 25.0 percent of a 102,936-tonne listed total across 151 reporters. Bolivia followed at 21,136 and Peru at 19,166 tonnes. Bolivia had the highest per-capita figure at 4.73 grams per person per day. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. Year-to-year comparisons use reporters present in both endpoint years, with the earlier year as the percentage base. Totals are FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (element 5141, tonnes); per-capita figures are element 665 in grams per capita per day — both for quinoa, 2019 through 2023. The elements count supply made available for human consumption over the reference period. A displayed zero means zero and a blank cell means no value was reported, and no percentage is shown where the base-year value is zero. This item covers 158 reporters in total, reporters only: World, regional and China (aggregate) rows are left out entirely, so China here means the China reporter. The 102,936-tonne listed total adds the 151 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes exactly as FAO reports them, without extra rounding. Quinoa Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How did Peru shape the single-year fall?
Peru fell 31,638 tonnes in 2022-2023 against a net listed decline of 42,333 tonnes. France, China, the United States, Italy, Bolivia and Israel removed a combined 8,818 tonnes, while Taiwan added 1,483 tonnes back.
Why did quinoa fall over five years against two gainers?
Peru and Bolivia together removed 20,633 tonnes in 2019-2023 against a net listed decline of 27,306 tonnes. Russia and Taiwan added 1,149 and 1,027 tonnes, partly offsetting those falls with France, Ecuador, Australia and Germany.
Is quinoa supply the same as quinoa eaten?
No. The FAO measure counts food available for human consumption; it does not directly record how much people ate.
