Two Giants, One Collapsing Year

The file spans 20 reporters with rice bran oil values, though only 17 carry a 2023 figure, with India and China holding nearly four fifths of the total between them. Three reporters entered the five-year comparison with reported zero values, contributing nothing to the totals.

South Korea's sharp 2023 fall dominates the single-year move, while India's steady gain leads the five-year net against broad falls elsewhere. Laos tops per person from tenth place by total.

India at 54.6 Percent; Laos First Per Person

The 2023 table opens with India at 243,178 tonnes, China second at 108,060 and Thailand third at 26,148. Brazil and Sri Lanka follow at 12,767 and 11,204 tonnes. India holds 54.6 percent of the 445,197-tonne listed total.

The top three reporters accounted for 84.8 percent of the listed total, the top five 90.2 percent and the top ten 99.4 percent. Per capita, Laos's 1.89 grams per person per day from 5,296 tonnes lead Sri Lanka at 1.34 grams, while India, first by total, records 0.46 grams.

Down 4.1 Percent in 2023 on South Korea's Fall

Across the 17 reporters with values in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply moved from 464,191 tonnes to 445,197 tonnes, down 18,994 tonnes or 4.1 percent. The two years share the same 17 reporters, with none entering or leaving. South Korea fell 28,113 tonnes (down 73.6 percent), Brazil 1,610 (down 11.2 percent), Thailand 888 (down 3.3 percent), China 787 (down 0.7 percent) and Vietnam 554 (down 7.0 percent).

On the gaining side, India added 8,066 tonnes (up 3.4 percent), Sri Lanka added 2,781 tonnes (up 33.0 percent) and Pakistan added 1,968 tonnes (up 35.3 percent).

South Korea's fall from 38,195 to 10,082 tonnes against a net decline of 18,994 exceeds the net total, with India's gain absorbing part of it. South Korea stood at 21,270 tonnes in 2019, so the 2022 peak of 38,195 came before the collapse.

Five Years Netted Down 0.3 Percent

For the 14 reporters with values in both 2019 and 2023, listed supply fell from 446,549 tonnes to 445,197 tonnes, down 1,352 tonnes or 0.3 percent. The 2019 universe holds 14 reporters with values against 17 in 2023; none left, while Congo, Iraq and Nigeria entered with reported zero values. India added 24,703 tonnes (up 11.3 percent), Pakistan 1,775 (up 30.8 percent) and Nepal 570 (up 5.6 percent), while South Korea fell 11,188 tonnes (down 52.6 percent), Brazil 5,643 (down 30.7 percent), Thailand 5,038 (down 16.2 percent), China 4,449 (down 4.0 percent) and Vietnam 1,968 (down 21.1 percent).

India's gain of 24,703 tonnes was nearly matched by combined falls of 28,286 tonnes in South Korea, Brazil, Thailand, China and Vietnam. Pakistan's rise from 5,768 to 7,543 tonnes, Nepal's from 10,263 to 10,833 and a smaller gain in Laos were the other five-year increases in the common comparison.

Rice Bran Oil Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

India recorded the largest 2023 listed rice bran oil supply at 243,178 tonnes — 54.6 percent of a 445,197-tonne listed total across 17 reporters. China followed at 108,060 and Thailand at 26,148 tonnes. Laos had the highest per-capita figure at 1.89 grams per person per day. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.

Methodology

Year-to-year comparisons use reporters present in both endpoint years, with the earlier year as the percentage base. Totals are FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (element 5141, tonnes); per-capita figures are element 665 in grams per capita per day — both for oil of rice bran, 2019 through 2023. The elements count supply made available for human consumption over the reference period. A displayed zero means zero and a blank cell means no value was reported, and no percentage is shown where the base-year value is zero.

This item covers 20 reporters in total, reporters only: World, regional and China (aggregate) rows are left out entirely, so China here means the China reporter. The 445,197-tonne listed total adds the 17 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes exactly as FAO reports them, without extra rounding. Frequently Asked Questions

How did South Korea spike then collapse?

South Korea reported 21,270 tonnes in 2019, 38,195 in 2022 and 10,082 tonnes in 2023. The single-year fall of 28,113 tonnes was a 73.6 percent decline. The figures record the spike and the collapse without identifying what caused either.

Why did five years barely move against India's gain?

India added 24,703 tonnes in 2019-2023 while South Korea, Brazil, Thailand, China and Vietnam together removed 28,286 tonnes. Pakistan and Nepal added modestly, leaving a net decline of 1,352 tonnes. The figures record these moves without identifying what caused them.

Is rice bran oil supply the same as oil actually used?

No. The FAO measure counts food available for human consumption; it does not directly record how much people consumed.
