Rice Flour Consumption by Country
Thailand holds 718,631 tonnes of listed rice flour supply in 2023 — 43.7 percent of a 1,646,287-tonne total — and also tops per person at 27.46 grams a day. The latest year fell 1.0 percent as Thailand's 115,023-tonne drop nearly mirrored India's 110,561-tonne gain. Five years added 0.8 percent, with Portugal, Tanzania and Italy climbing from tiny bases while Saudi Arabia, France and the Netherlands fell to near zero. India traces a V across the window, from 212,169 tonnes in 2019 down to 93,660 in 2022 and back to 204,221 in 2023.
Thailand sits top at 718,631 tonnes, 1.95 times China at 368,486, with India third at 204,221 and Taiwan fourth at 61,685. Per person Thailand doubles most of the field too at 27.46 grams a day, ahead of Taiwan at 7.25 and Portugal at 4.36. The file spans 98 reporters with rice flour values, though only 91 carry a 2023 figure. Thailand and China together hold 66.0 percent of the listed total, and Thailand tops both measures. The 1.0 percent annual move hides Thailand's and India's near-mirror swings, while Brazil's sharp 2022 rise and subsequent fall also shaped the annual figure. The 0.8 percent five-year net reflects large climbs from small bases in Portugal, Tanzania and Italy alongside steep falls in Saudi Arabia, France and the Netherlands. The 2023 table opens with Thailand at 718,631 tonnes, China second at 368,486 and India third at 204,221. Taiwan and Germany follow at 61,685 and 34,520 tonnes. Thailand holds 43.7 percent of the 1,646,287-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 78.4 percent of the listed total, the top five 84.3 percent and the top ten 90.9 percent. Per capita, Thailand's 27.46 grams per person per day lead Taiwan at 7.25 grams. Thailand ranks first on both measures, with the largest total supply and the highest per-capita figure. Across the 87 reporters with values in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply moved from 1,662,087 tonnes to 1,646,190 tonnes, down 15,897 tonnes or 1.0 percent. The 2022 and 2023 common totals cover the same 87 reporters; the full 2023 listed total of 1,646,287 adds 97 tonnes from Chile, Ecuador, Laos and Senegal, which had no 2022 value, and none left. Thailand fell 115,023 tonnes (down 13.8 percent), Brazil 47,131 (down 94.5 percent) and Spain 6,361 (down 26.6 percent). On the gaining side, India added 110,561 tonnes (up 118.0 percent), Kazakhstan added 14,421 tonnes (up 337.0 percent), Portugal added 13,264 tonnes (up 399.6 percent), Myanmar added 7,642 tonnes (up 92.3 percent) and Germany added 3,394 tonnes (up 10.9 percent). Thailand's fall from 833,654 to 718,631 tonnes against India's rise from 93,660 to 204,221 nearly mirror each other, while Brazil's fall from 49,858 to 2,727 tonnes reversed its 2022 spike. For the 80 reporters with values in both 2019 and 2023, listed supply rose from 1,633,411 tonnes to 1,646,165 tonnes, up 12,753 tonnes or 0.8 percent. The 2019 universe holds 87 reporters with values against 91 in 2023; seven reporters with a combined 90 tonnes left, while 11 with a combined 123 tonnes entered. Portugal added 16,467 tonnes from 116 tonnes, Tanzania 13,443 (up 394.6 percent), Italy 12,255 from 662 tonnes and Germany 11,313 (up 48.7 percent), while China fell 17,907 tonnes (down 4.6 percent), Saudi Arabia 11,008 (down 100.0 percent), France 10,963 (down 93.5 percent) and the Netherlands 10,960 (down 72.9 percent). Portugal, Tanzania and Italy together added 42,165 tonnes from tiny bases, outweighing China's decline. Saudi Arabia's fall from 11,008 tonnes to a reported zero, France's from 11,725 to 762 tonnes and the Netherlands' from 15,028 to 4,068 removed most of their 2019 supplies. Counted here is the Flour of rice item in the FAO Supply Utilization Accounts, as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A total of this kind is not an estimate of what people actually ate. The per-person measure restates the reported supply as grams available per person each day, and here both views agree: Thailand tops the table by total and per person. Thailand recorded the largest 2023 listed rice flour supply at 718,631 tonnes — 43.7 percent of a 1,646,287-tonne listed total across 91 reporters. China followed at 368,486 and India at 204,221 tonnes. Thailand had the highest per-capita figure at 27.46 grams per person per day. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. Year-to-year comparisons use reporters present in both endpoint years, with the earlier year as the percentage base. Totals are FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity (element 5141, tonnes); per-capita figures are element 665 in grams per capita per day — both for flour of rice, 2019 through 2023. The elements count supply made available for human consumption over the reference period. A displayed zero means zero and a blank cell means no value was reported, and no percentage is shown where the base-year value is zero. This item covers 98 reporters in total, reporters only: World, regional and China (aggregate) rows are left out entirely, so China here means the China reporter. The 1,646,287-tonne listed total adds the 91 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes exactly as FAO reports them, without extra rounding. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How did Thailand and India mirror each other in one year?
Thailand fell 115,023 tonnes in 2022-2023 while India added 110,561 tonnes. The two moves nearly cancel against a net decline of 15,897 tonnes. The figures record the size of these moves without identifying what caused them.
How did tiny bases reshape five years?
Portugal rose from 116 tonnes in 2019 to 16,583 tonnes in 2023, Tanzania from 3,407 to 16,850 and Italy from 662 to 12,917 tonnes. The figures record these moves from tiny bases without identifying what caused them.
Is rice flour supply the same as flour eaten?
No. The FAO measure counts food available for human consumption; it does not directly record how much people ate.
