Türkiye Dominates the 2023 Supply
Türkiye led at 92,171 tonnes, 32.63 times Libya. The top three held 97.6 percent of the 99,982-tonne total, and the top five 99.5 percent. Afghanistan sat fourth at 1,467 tonnes and South Korea fifth at 470, ahead of Bahrain at 216. Iraq, third by volume, has fallen by two-thirds since 2019. Of 32 countries in the file, 30 carried a 2023 value.
Across the 29 countries in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 68.6 percent, from 59,287 tonnes, a gain of 40,694. Türkiye added 39,681 tonnes, up 75.6 percent, nearly all of the net rise. Libya added 2,666 tonnes, up 1,681.2 percent from 159, landing second. Iraq shed 2,368 tonnes, down 48.1 percent. Afghanistan added 662 tonnes and South Korea 78, while Austria shed 65 and Bahrain 61. Among the 17 countries in both 2019 and 2023, supply grew 244.9 percent, from 28,510 tonnes, a gain of 69,817. Türkiye added 72,171 tonnes, up 360.9 percent from 20,000, more than the net rise on its own. Libya added 2,634 tonnes from 191. Iraq moved the other way, shedding 5,092 tonnes, down 66.6 percent. Botswana added 10 tonnes from 0.01, and Azerbaijan 14 from 1.21. Thirteen countries joined over the period, adding 1,654 tonnes, against one departure. Iraq shed 2,368 tonnes in the latest year and 5,092 over five, falling from 7,647 to 2,555 tonnes. Its 48.1 percent latest-year fall was the sharpest among the top five. Per person, Iraq sat at 0.18 grams, a fraction of Libya's 1.06. Afghanistan, fourth at 1,467 tonnes, added 662 in the latest year. Bahrain ended 2023 almost exactly where it started in 2019, despite several swings in between. It shed 61 tonnes in the latest year, down 22.1 percent from 277. Per person, Bahrain sat third at 0.38 grams, its best rank in either table. South Korea, fifth at 470 tonnes, added 78 in the latest year and sits at 0.02 grams per person. Türkiye's 2.89 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Libya at 1.06 and Bahrain at 0.38. Iraq sat at 0.18 grams and Afghanistan at 0.10, so the volume top five scattered down the per-person table. South Korea, fifth by volume, sat at 0.02 grams per person. Lithuania and Latvia followed at 0.08 and 0.03 grams per person per day, despite being outside the volume top five. This page follows the SUA item labelled Safflower seed and counts only its rows; World, regional and aggregate rows are not in the table. The annual listed supply total sums the countries with a 2023 value. The figures represent food available for human consumption in the reference year, not the amount actually eaten. For safflower seed, tonnage follows element 5141 and daily grams follow element 665 across 2019 to 2023. A change is measured from the earlier year; none is stated from a zero base. Only countries present in both compared years enter a change. A reported zero is not a blank, and blanks never stand in for zeros. The file holds 32 countries after removing World, regional and aggregate rows; 30 carry 2023 values. One country holds over nine-tenths of the listed volume. The numbers describe food available for human consumption. Source: FAO FAOSTAT, compiled by StatsGeo.Libya's Eighteen-Fold Jump
