Sorghum Exports by Country
Australia exported 180,791 tonnes of sorghum in 2020 and 2,220,129 tonnes in 2024, more than twelve times its 2020 level, a rise that built a new second place behind the United States. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Sorghum, 2020-2024, pairing export quantity in tonnes with export value in current US dollars. The table lists 103 countries; 64 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is about 9.5 million tonnes. The 2024 country list for sorghum exports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
The United States was the largest sorghum exporter in the 2024 listed data with 5,389,881 tonnes, followed by Australia with 2,220,129 tonnes and Argentina with 1,102,557 tonnes. Brazil ranked fourth with 179,881 tonnes, ahead of France (163,669 tonnes), Hungary (86,323 tonnes), Uganda (83,363 tonnes) and Ukraine (56,506 tonnes). The United States also led on export value at 1,458,800,000 US dollars, followed by Australia (629,181,000) and Argentina (243,391,000). No other 2020-2024 move in this table approaches Australia's: +2,039,338 tonnes against a 2020 base of 180,791, while Argentina's 640,457-tonne gain (up 138.6 percent) looks modest beside it, and the United States actually retreated 1,196,697 tonnes (down 18.2 percent) yet kept the lead at a 2.43 ratio. Australia's rise, not the leader's defense, is the period's story. The United States holds 56.7 percent of the listed 2024 total; the top three together hold 91.6 percent, the top five 95.2 percent and the top ten 98.5 percent. Argentina and Brazil were the leading South American exporters behind the leader, France, Hungary and Ukraine represent Europe, Uganda carries East Africa, and Australia stands alone for Oceania. Across the 61 countries reporting in both years, total exports rose from 8,056,976 tonnes in 2023 to 9,511,415 tonnes in 2024, a gain of 1,454,439 tonnes (18.1 percent). The totals listed for each year were 8,090,297 tonnes (81 reporters) and 9,511,464 tonnes (64 reporters). The United States added 1,012,818 tonnes (up 23.1 percent) and Argentina 350,992 tonnes (up 46.7 percent), while Brazil added 146,001 tonnes (from 33,880 to 179,881 tonnes) from a small base. Australia fell 223,165 tonnes (down 9.1 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (52 countries with data in both years) rose from 7,794,441 tonnes to 9,509,582 tonnes, a change of 1,715,141 tonnes (22.0 percent). The totals listed for each year were 7,909,166 tonnes (74 reporters) and 9,511,464 tonnes (64 reporters). Uganda added 56,516 tonnes (from 26,847 to 83,363 tonnes, up 210.5 percent). Ukraine fell 62,365 tonnes (down 52.5 percent) and Burkina Faso 40,253 tonnes (down 96.2 percent). The ranking and every share in this article rest on 2024 listed quantities, not on multi-year averages or values. Those quantities are FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for sorghum exports, summed into yearly reporter totals for 2020-2024. Displayed quantities keep two decimals below 1,000 tonnes and whole tonnes above. Values are full current US dollars and are not inflation-adjusted. The 2024 sorghum exports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the sorghum exports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. The sorghum exports change uses overlapping reporters only; countries entering or leaving the listed set are shown separately. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an export entry and its mirror import may not match.Sorghum Exports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How did Australia become second?
Australia reported 180,791 tonnes for 2020 and 2,220,129 tonnes for 2024, an increase of 2,039,338 tonnes. No percentage accompanies a move from that base; the absolute gain, the largest in the table in either comparison window, carries the story.
Why is Brazil's 430.9 percent shown with its base?
Brazil grew from 33,880 tonnes in 2023 to 179,881 tonnes in 2024, an increase of 146,001 tonnes. For sorghum, the percentage is read alongside the absolute gain because the starting quantity is small.
Can the leader fall and still lead?
The United States fell from 6,586,578 tonnes in 2020 to 5,389,881 tonnes in 2024 (down 18.2 percent) and still holds 56.7 percent at a 2.43 ratio. The gap behind it stayed wide enough that the retreat did not cost it the top rank.
What does this sorghum exports dataset not cover?
Whether sorghum output rose or fell, who consumed it, or what it cost to produce; none of that is in this dataset. It records export quantities and values by reporter, so only export-side comparisons hold.
