Sorghum Imports by Country
China accounts for 91.3 percent of the sorghum imports in this dataset, about fifty-three times the runner-up, and its change had a major effect on both comparison windows. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Sorghum, 2020-2024, pairing import quantity in tonnes with import value in current US dollars. The table lists 151 countries; 102 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is about 9.5 million tonnes. The 2024 country list for sorghum imports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
China was the largest sorghum importer in the 2024 listed data with 8,655,827 tonnes, followed by South Africa with 164,105 tonnes and Japan with 122,071 tonnes. Italy ranked fourth with 98,112 tonnes, ahead of Spain (75,385 tonnes), Taiwan (59,832 tonnes), Uganda (40,201 tonnes) and Mexico (35,746 tonnes). China also led on import value at 2,592,625,000 US dollars, followed by Japan (40,118,000) and South Africa (33,736,000). China's 2023-2024 gain of 3,442,657 tonnes stands at about 97 percent of the common-universe net gain of 3,541,380 tonnes; its 2020-2024 gain of 3,842,353 tonnes exceeds the net gain of 3,349,014 tonnes. The top three hold 94.3 percent of the listed 2024 total, the top five 96.2 percent and the top ten 98.2 percent. Behind China, Japan and Taiwan buy in East Asia, South Africa and Uganda in Africa, Italy and Spain in Europe, and Mexico in North America, each under 2 percent of the total. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (95 countries with data in both years) rose from 5,928,645 tonnes to 9,470,025 tonnes, a change of 3,541,380 tonnes (59.7 percent). The totals listed for each year were 6,141,959 tonnes (125 reporters) and 9,478,475 tonnes (102 reporters). Italy added 67,197 tonnes (from 30,915 to 98,112 tonnes, up 217.4 percent) from a small base, alongside South Africa with 65,076 tonnes (up 65.7 percent) and Spain with 34,714 tonnes (up 85.4 percent). Japan fell 62,631 tonnes (down 33.9 percent) and Mexico 17,497 tonnes (down 32.9 percent). Across the 92 countries reporting in both years, total imports rose from 6,124,861 tonnes in 2020 to 9,473,875 tonnes in 2024, a gain of 3,349,014 tonnes (54.7 percent). The totals listed for each year were 6,362,145 tonnes (127 reporters) and 9,478,475 tonnes (102 reporters). South Africa added 152,179 tonnes (from 11,926 to 164,105 tonnes) with no percentage stated, as did Uganda with 36,268 tonnes (from 3,933 to 40,201 tonnes) and Brazil with 32,144 tonnes (from 2,606 to 34,750 tonnes). Mexico fell 286,875 tonnes (down 88.9 percent) and Japan 260,195 tonnes (down 68.1 percent). Bilateral pairs in the source data are not fully reconciled: an import record here and its mirror export elsewhere can disagree because of timing, classification and valuation gaps. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can also apply. The yearly reporter totals below sum those bilateral flows for sorghum imports, 2020-2024. Displayed quantities keep two decimals below 1,000 tonnes and whole tonnes above; values are full current US dollars, unadjusted for inflation. The 2024 sorghum imports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the sorghum imports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. The sorghum imports change uses overlapping reporters only; countries entering or leaving the listed set are shown separately.Sorghum Imports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
What does China's 91.3 percent share describe?
China reported 8,655,827 of the 9,478,475 tonnes in the 2024 listed data across 102 reporting countries. The share describes this dataset, not the world market; non-reporters sit outside both the total and the ranking.
Why are South Africa's, Uganda's and Brazil's gains shown without percentages?
South Africa moved from 11,926 to 164,105 tonnes, Uganda from 3,933 to 40,201 and Brazil from 2,606 to 34,750. Rates off such bases would run to four digits while describing tens of thousands of tonnes, so the gains appear in absolute terms with both endpoints shown.
Why did Mexico and Japan retreat so far between 2020 and 2024?
Mexico fell from 322,621 tonnes in 2020 to 35,746 tonnes in 2024 (down 88.9 percent) and Japan from 382,266 to 122,071 tonnes (down 68.1 percent). Both endpoints are reported quantities, so the retreats count inside the change arithmetic; the table attributes no causes.
What does this sorghum imports series not show?
This dataset does not cover production, stocks, domestic use, or processing; it records reporter-level import quantities and values, so its comparisons stay on the import side.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
